One funny optical note - the panoramas are shot on rectilinear super-wide lenses.
What does this mean practically? It means that when you view the panoramas, the landscape looks distorted. The reason for this is that the images are perspective mapped onto a flat plane with a short focal length. Since the human eye is around 40-50mm in equivalent focal length, at normal viewing distances, the objects near the edge of the screen look much larger than objects at the center. This means that the perspective distortion disappears when the human eye is very close to the screen - about 1-2 inches away. You'll look funny doing it, but try it out and you'll understand.
