The answer to this is buy a stock grooved pulley just like the grooved idler, then put one of them on a lathe and cut the grooves off of it. This one goes in the idler position, the grooved one goes in the new position, that way you have a setup where the belt cannot slip off. An additional support might be helpful, check my setup below.
