Default Oil filter

Do I have to get the Mann filter? Or can I go with Bosch? I have researched a little and know that fleece is better but I don't know if it has to be a certain brand. Advice please?

This subject has been discussed / reviewed over and over and over. You can use any oil filter you like but the consensus of forum members is to recommend the Mann HU718-5X fleece filter like this one . . .

Yup. I've used all of the "top names" of oil filters and I will only use the Mann unit. All others, including the Bosch, showed signs of collapse when changed out. (K&N, Purolator-fleece, Bosch, Mobil 1, etc.)

NOT the Mann, however.

Used Fram, never again! Used Mobil1 filter and it did 'pucker' inwards slightly (you could call it collapse but I don't). Never tried the Mann 'fleese' or any other type yet. Might try after using up the rest of the Mobil1 filters, or until a Mobil1 filter does something I don't like. Have used three Mobil1 filters since purchase and the 'pucker' is present on all (but) the filter integrity was never compromised.

Good choice. I'm using Mann filter also and have no plan on using other brands.

I have done 60,000 miles of oil changes on these cars. I have never seen a Fleece filter physically compromised as I took it out.
In the car I just bought, it had a paper filter, and it had collapsed/crushed/compromised.

I would not use a paper filter before, and I sure as hell wouldn't now.

I will be sticking with the Mann. For about the same price as others and better durability, they will be my choice.

I have used the Fram XG8481 a couple times in past oil changes. This filter actually seems to be pretty decent and had shown no signs of collapse either time. It is however quite a bit more expensive than the Mann filter.

Now that I have a second Crossfire at home, and it's basically a daily driver to my Roadster's weekend/fun use, I'll be buying more oil filters. A few years back I bought a 6 pack on ebay and just found the same deal once again - 6 of the proper Mann filters for $47.94 shipped. At basically $8/unit they're a deal. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Mann-Engine-Oil-Fleece-Filter-Kit-w-Seal-Rings-Sold-AS-6-HU7185X-/351441667873?hash=item51d38e4721&vxp=mtr

The service manuals for the SLK350s state that when using any spec 229.5 oil you MUST use a fleece filter or risk damaging the engine. The paper filters are known to start deteriorating @ around 5K and their residue can cause clogging of the oil journals. I've always used Manns over a dozen times in both XFs and never a collapse. And both get 10K oil changes!
