Re: I found out why my subwoofers don't work. Totally shot speaker surround
I repaired them both yesterday with the kit from eBay. $23 for 2 foam surrounds and tube of glue. It took maybe ½ hour each to remove the foam remnants and clean up the speaker. I used alcohol wipes after scraping off all the gooey foam, and tried to ensure I had the cones centered with no rubbing of the voice coil when I did the final mounting of the surround. They sound great and I am glad I decided to tear into them.

With a little bit of grinding, you can get these to sit right into the stock sub box.
I have removed the rear portion of the box to minimize buzzing sound from plastic on plastic contact.

Just as an update, I did eBay feedback for the repair kit, and they emailed thanking me.
I asked a few questions and this is the response from "Simply Speakers"
"
Thanks for the photo. We have seen our fair share of these drivers too over the years. You are correct the driver is more or less a proprietary one that you will have to pay dearly for at the dealership. If you go aftermarket you will also need to change the integrated amplifier. It’s a nice speaker for a stock factory system just an expensive one to replace. The newer foams are a better formula and more durable than the older foam. This give the speaker an expected life of 10-15 years. For an already 10+ year old vehicle this may be a 1 time only repair for many of us.
The eBay pricing is as aggressive as we can get. That is on ongoing 10% off our normal retail price. You can let anyone from the forum know they can order over the phone and we’ll be glad to honor the eBay sale price if they mention your post. Enjoy you’re the sounds in your Crossfire!"

I too have refoamed my OEM subwoofers after reading Pioneer4x4 post, not too difficult. It made a huge difference in the stock sound system. When I took the speakers out the original foam looked OK, but close examination revealed a crack all the way around the speaker between the frame and cone. I bought directly from Simplyspeakers.com. Their standard kit FSK-6P206 is an exact replacement for our subwoofer speakers $24.95. I also used their foam sealer, but warn that you can distort the new foam if you screw the gasket directly through the new foam as they show on their video site. I recommend you use an ice pick or similar tool to force a hole through the foam [I]AND[I] lightly lubricate the screw for the gasket with oil before attempting to tighten the gasket in place on the new foam. This is especially important if you use their foam sealer.
