How daring are you?
Re: How daring are you?
Why would you want to let the gas get that low? Don't you know that any sediment or crap in your tank is at the bottom and when you let it get that low you'll be sucking it up with the remaining gas. I realize there are filters and all but why look for trouble. Is it just an old wives tale I'm recalling from an old wife or have others heard this as well?
Re: How daring are you?
I never heard that one, but I was told to fill 'er up any time the tank hits half empty, because an empty tank invites condensation, and you end up with water in the tank. Plus, forking over twenty clams at a time hurts less.

Re: How daring are you?
the high pressure fuel pumps in modern cars produce heat and need to be cooled. many are located in the fuel tank so that they are cooled by the residual fuel. running too low on fuel is not cool, pun intended. repeatedly running low or possibly out of fuel will shorten the life of the fuel pump. that's one reason it is often recommended to fill up when you get down to 1/4 tank. the good news is that car manufacturers often slightly understate the actual size of the fuel tanks in their vehicles. so if it takes 15 gallons of fuel to fill your crossfire there was probably somewhere between 1-2 gallons already in there to help prevent damage to the pump.

11.2 gallons was my highest. I seem to getting about 23 miles per gallon. I usually don't go too far below half a tank in part because of what dobro said. I enjoy getting gas because people always complement the car. I guess I need a vanity plate that reads MY EGO .

Last week coming home from the big mopar show in Penn, I was having so much fun trying to keep up with Andrew on the Turnpike that I wasn't paying any attention to my fuel gauge. That is until it started blinking. I tried to get close enough to Andrew to "draft" a little, but he keeps his wing in the down and locked position, so not much luck there either.
Finally found a Sunoco gas station in time, and put 15.166 gals in for $48.36. Works out to 27.36 mpg. All the time Andrew "detailed his car".

Re: How daring are you?
Read somewhere you should never let your tank get below 1/4 nor should you fill it over 3/4 of a tank...I do understand the 1/4 part but do not know what they meant by the never over 3/4 bit...?? Anyway, I never let mine get below 1/2 to 1/4 anyway but I do fill it to the top despite what they say. Filled up two days ago at the really economical price of $3.19 per gallon...Yikes!!!
Re: How daring are you?
On the fill up the 3/4 is wrong. However once your pump clicks off stop there. To put more in can damage the pollution control devices. Unless the design has changed on this car: There is typically a vent tube to a charcoal filter to rid the tank of fumes. If you fill to much raw gas can go into that area and saturate the filtering device, thus prematurely wearing or ruining it.
