Default How's your 6-Speed?

A while ago we had several threads where people discussed the notchiness of the 6-speed and difficulty getting into reverse. I was wondering if adding a few thousand miles has made things better or worse? Personally, after 31,000 miles, the shifting is noticeably better and the getting into reverse problem has virtually disappeared.

I only have about 9,000 on mine, but I don't think that it is any better...just that I have gotten used to the way it is. It has only popped out of first gear once and that was some time ago...scared the crap out of me.

I fall on the same category as danimal. I have little over 8K. No difference since day 1. No popping out of first.

Bobs, maybe you should add another choice for "same as the day I drove off the lot".

I have 15,000 miles and it seems to shift just fine. As for the notchy feeling that could just be the shifter design or heavier internal parts in the transmission.

Maybe we should all write to Hurst, and see if we can get them to do some design improvements.

Only 5k on mine and no change, so no vote...

Really need another option, ie, see no difference.

Or maybe 2 options, see no difference - its a good shifting transmission or: see no difference - still have problems with this pos.

Henry Payne - whose six speed shifts like it did when I bought it, which was good, but its only been a couple thousand miles.

'05 Base - 7,850 miles

I've got 14,000 mi on mine and it seems to shift easier especially into second gear. Reverse has never been a problem. I enjoy shifting so the 6-speed works for me.

I personally noticed the transmission shifts easier after it is warmed up, maybe about half an hour or driving. Then it's smoother, and reverse is easier to get in gear also.

I've always had a problem engaging 1st gear. Its been quite a few times that it has popped out of first. I discovered that it does it when you don't fully engage the gear into 1st.

I guess I'm lucky KOW never had any trouble with mine. It's no better or worse than when I got the car a year ago.

I just turned 32K on my 6 speed and have gotten used to the feel of the shifter. Never had any problems with the popping out of gear, although I've missed a few shifts along the way. Overall, I'm pleased with the transmission.

I have about 7,500 miles on my base 6 speed. When new I thought the shifting was very notchy. It now feels much smoother. My previous car was a '95 Supra and it was just a better shifting car. I, however love the Crossfire and have had no problems.

For those of you who noticed the 6-speed car makes a rattling sound when you shut the car off. I discovered the rattling noises are NOT the valvetrain, but it's something in the clutch. Might be the throw out bearing or just a bit of warping in the flywheel. Probably out of tolerance by .003 - .005".
Try stepping on the clutch pedal before you shutdown the car.

I've never had many problems with mine, other than the fact that it's harder to do a 1st-to-2nd shift than a dead stop-to-1st. And the occasional popping out of first when I drive off a curb.

But I'd have to say the shifting is better, but perhaps that is because I'm now used to it...

I bought my car last year with 6K on it, and I definitely had some problems getting it into reverse sometimes. Now, with 36K, it seems fine. I thought maybe it had something to do with the cold weather...hopefully just had to wear in.

I had about 10,000 - 12,000 on my first tranny and I had a serious issue getting it into reverse plus I had some grinding in the tranny while the clutch was pushed in. Chrysler replaced the Tranny and I now have about 18,000 on the car and everything works great!
