Default tire pressure

i was inspecting my tires this weekend and noticed that the max psi on the tires is 49. what do you keep your tires at?

I keep them at the recommended pressure that's located on the driver's door. 32 front, 33 rear.

I agree with goalie. Keep your tires at the recommend pressure because the pressure fluctuates as you drive. The pressure in your tires increases as they warm up or as drive to a lower elevation. I have had my TPM light come on when it is cold and then go off when the tire warms up, I also had it come on a drive to Tahoe. I don't recommend relying on the TPM, check your tire pressure regularly.

TPM went on the other day and when I checked the pressure it was 30 PSI all around. My gauge is very accurate. As soon as I filled it to the 32/33 PSI the light was off. And its funny because I had noticed a slight difference in the handling for a week or so also. Didn't notice the PSM light during that week because at my height the light is obstructed by the steering wheel so I never thought the inflation was off. I assumed the handling situation was due to the high winds NY was experiencing at the time. Filled the tires to the recommended pressure and it seems fine again.

Same thing happened to me. The light came on as soon as it started getting cold outside and the tires were all 30 - 31 PSI. I filled them up a few PSI and no more light.

So I guess the system actually works, right? I wonder if they changed the trigger level on the newer sensors because they're not supposed to trip the light until the pressure hits 26 psi, if I remember correctly.

I live in south texas so on a warm afternoon when the car has been sitting all day I air up to 35 in the front and 36 in the rear. The car handles very well like that.

I bump mine up a couple lbs. to 34 front - 35 rear and get better handling and MPGs without sacrificing ride quality.

Remember that the TPM also will come on when a single tire is 10% (I think) different from the rest of the tires. This is an indicator to the system that you have one tire with a slow leak and to check it before it becomes a violent blowout on the freeway.

Cheers!

Jody, that is not correct. The TPM light trips when any tire drops below the threshold pressure. Low pressure is defined as 26 PSI. I couldn't find a reference to Critical Pressure. Here's the quote from the service manual:

DESCRIPTION
This vehicle has a tire pressure monitoring (TPM) system. It is there to alert the driver when air pressure in any of the vehicle’s four tires falls below a predetermined threshold. It alerts the driver with a lamp in the instrument cluster.

The tire pressure monitoring system utilizes transmitters that are located in the valve stem of each tire to communicate the tire pressure condition to the module. If a tire has low air pressure, an indicator light on the instrument cluster is illuminated. The vehicle operator must check the tire pressure of each tire in order to determine which tire has a low pressure condition.

The garage door opener/tire pressure monitoring (TPM) module has a microprocessor controller that can monitor the transmissions from the sensor/transmitters anytime the ignition is on. It can store the last 32 transmissions. There are two important values included in these transmissions. They are:

² Why the transmission was sent,
² Low Tire Pressure

The module compares the transmitted tire pressure from the sensor to the two pressure thresholds (low pressure or critical pressure). If the module determines that the tire pressure transmitted is below the low or critical pressure thresholds, it will signal for the “Low Tire” pressure warning lamp to come on.

I have a limited and the recommended is 32 front 33 rear.
On the srt6 36 front 36 rear is recommended.
I put eibach springs on my car and tried 36 all around and I like it this way.
Hope this helps.

It's not the years, it's the high mileage.

I run the same psi as well. Works well.
