radar detector info
I just got my first speeding ticket in over 30 years and was wondering if anyone had a recommendation regarding an up to date radar device that is both effective and legal in New York state.
I don't want anything that is permenantly wired.
thank you in advance your your feed back.

Although I don't have any advise on which detectors are better than others, I will say that radar detectors are not all they are cracked up to be.
If you are cruising down the highway and a speed check is set up, your radar detector is useless, as by the time your detector is beeping, the officer probably already got you. When cops are sitting and waiting for speeders, they will usually shut off their radar in between shots, that way your detector won't detect them. The only thing radar detectors are good for is those rural roads where a cop might try to get you while driving towards you. Since he is driving, he doesn't really have time to turn the radar on and off, therefore he is constantly emitting radar and your detector will pick him up.
I've gotten two speeding tickets, both with the use of a radar detector, both on interstates at speed checks. The detector did save me several times while driving back roads.
Furthermore, even though many detectors sense laser as well as radar, your chances of detecting laser soon enough is pretty slim.

I just drove about 120 miles on the Garden State Parkway with my Valentnie 1. There were 2 speed traps. Right before both of them I was going about 90 and was able to slow to 65 with a good amount of time to spare. The Valentine 1 is the only detector even worth getting. It has saved me countless times.
I gotta' go with Mighty on this one. Although it is true nothing will save you from "instant on" or laser, the Valentine 1 I have has saved my bacon on numerous occasions. The range is as good or better than anyones and the arrows put it head and sholders above the rest. Knowledge (Where the hell is he?!) is power.
Ok blatant self promotion time, but i hope it may also be helpful?

I agree with the others that the Valentine One is the way to go. No other detector has the arrows to tell you where it's coming from. But remember that a radar detector does not necessarily keep you away from tickets. Rather, it simply improves your odds. With the instant-on radar in use now, if you're the only or the lead car on the highway, it's not going to help much. But if you're following someone who's running as fast as you, however, you will get adequate warning when the officer strobes the lead car. As far as laser goes, even the V-1 manual states that if your detector signals laser, you've got to slow down real fast. (Meaning: too late, you're screwed.)
Passport Solo II can't be beat for its ease of portability. Keep a few AA batteries in one of the glove boxes for quick changes. Have used one since it was introduced with thousands of miles in California, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and Nevada. No tickets to date, but pay attention to those intermintent beeps. 8)
