Default Best way to pull away from stand-still in the auto gearbox

OK, I've seen a number of posts on this but not to do with the auto gear box. I tried sitting in neutral, revving to 4,000 rpm and then dunking it into drive, it just sat there, the computer stopped it doing anything. I looked like a right *** at the lights reving and not going anywhere! I've not been able to do a wheel spin pulling away in my auto box. How can this be done?

Thanks.

Good explainations of "torque braking" using the auto transmission.
