Crossfire a "Throwaway" car?
Crossfire a "Throwaway" car?
This is a reply by Glyn M. Ruck to a post I made on the MBWorld website about possible substitutions for the recommended ATF for the 722.6 trans on Crossfires.
Read the rest of the thread & many other threads I've written on the subject. I don't care what was said for the Crossfire, Benz only recommends 236.14 for 722.6 now. See letter in thread. The Xfire was an American style throw away motorcar. Not a Benz.
Mr. Ruck is very knowledgeable about lubricants and ATF, but obviously not about Crossfires.

Well, you do want use the good stuff in your tranny regardless of cost, but not because someone wants to claim to be the expert on oils.... I have a Mobil engineer buddy who has that title. He's never steered me wrong yet......and they analyze things to death....

He went on to call it "Fugly" which is slang for f and ugly, so the bottom line, the guy has a problem with the car. I don't expect everyone to like what I drive, but personally, I really like the looks of the crossfire. But then again, I like the mid-30 Fords, 55-57 Chevys, 57-67 Corvettes and Becky's legs in study hall (still the best memory in high school).......but what do I know.

Mercedes Benz are" the best engineered cars in the world."
our Crossfire was engineered by the same Benz teams.
Built carefully with pride in the same Karman plant
And just like the Mercedes Benz of such high praise, our cars were assembled with the cheapest parts.
So what?

We get: A low volume custom bodied art deco beauty. They get: nice looking cars of which I see dozens every single day - exclusive? really?
We get: A full on Mercedes for 1/3 the price They get: reamed, steamed, dry cleaned
We get: envious looks from strangers They get: Envious looks from service advisors (wallet envy)
We get: incredible performance parts They get: Same parts which wouldn't exist without the Crossfire
What do they have we don't have? Poor Attitude

I've been on MB-World for several years, and Glyn has always been a bit... eccentric.
He's a smart guy, but clearly revealing his ignorance in this case. Not to mention, disrespectful.
Personally I am wary of men who are self-proclaimed experts in lube. JMHO...

Of course, these same people would go to the grave denying that... but you know a tree by its fruit, not by its tag.

Thing is, the only people that feel the need for such a superiority complex are the ones who have few other triumphs in life. If you feel the need to degrade another man's pride to feel better about your own, then you've proven to the world how inadequate you feel.

Well I'm biased, I always thought that Mercedes made the worlds best taxicabs. Of course I also remember when the BMW was voted the World's Best Sports Sedan Under $2,000.
When I was growing up my father had a Karmann Ghia 'vert that had the easiest top to put up or down I had seen until a Fiat 124 Spyder (at the time most of my cars had erector sets).
So to each their own. I really like my XF but had no compulsion against using a SawZall to make it fit me better. Except for the engine being in the wrong end it is better in nearly every way than my Fieros.
