Default Cup Holder Problems

I can't get my cup holder to close, any suggestions? I know this has been a problem, but mine just crapped out on my 2005 roadster limited....

In the end I just removed the spring, because every time I put my elbow down the damn thing popped up.

It's not like I would ever think of that thing ever holding a cup.

This is one of those times when we gotta tell ya to SEARCH.
This one is just too easy. I searched using "cupholder spring", the second post has info on a TSB for this.

If the cup holder is up, thumb on the silver part, index finger on the black underside, squeeze together, and it should drop into its slot .... works for me. TBW

Grab the raised cup holder, then twist that SOB outta there, and replace with the optional storage bin! Don't twist it out, you might of thought I was serious, but if you don't like the cup holder, like me, then now may the time to disassemble the console and replace with the storage bin.

Yea, you kinda pull up on the underside while pushing down on the top side. My "cup holder" works ok for 20 oz bottles of soda. The 12 oz cans tend to get bent up when inserted.

The designer of that unit should be dragged out back and flogged.

It also pokes holes in styrofoam cups FULL of gooey caramel macchiato. How do you get that stuff out of the gearbox?

Find a very large ball peen hammer and some safety glasses. Put on the safety glasses. Pop a heavy metal album into the cd player and turn up the volume until you can't stand it. Pick up the hammer and beat the cupholder flush with the console. Remove the safety glasses. Take the album out of the cd player. Open a cold one and congratulate yourself on a job well done.

So I'm new here and guess why I sought out the site? CUP HOLDER PROBLEM. Candy, I did the same thing. Poked holes in the styrofoam cup filled with piping hot Cafe Con Leche! Then I grabbed the cup to stop the oozing lava from spilling all over my off white interior and it tears the flappy wings off the holder.
This wasn't the first time pieces have flown off the holder to. Over time, it has gotten weaker and weaker.

So I have a new cup holder to put in...but I had to stop my boyfriend who was about to break every console piece to open that cover and replace the cupholder. I have an 05 Automatic. Any clues on how to get the damn thing open without chawin' up the pretty pieces?

I plan to put the new holder in and keep it closed. It's best to have something there for resale reasons......should I ever dare to replace my Chicita.

You will never be able to keep your cup holder closed. Here was my best solution:

Agree. When the cupholder wouldn't shut on the SRT6, I brought it back to the dealer just before the warranty expired. I asked (begged) them to replace it with the little compartment but when I picked it up, yet another poorly designed cupholder. Second best solution: don't use it.

Mine only pops up once in awhile. Mostly when I'm really laying into it. I hit 2nd, nudge the door in the process, and up it goes. And it seems everytime I have a passenger it gets hit by them. The thing is more trouble than it's worth but I can't seem to commit to removing it. DAD BLASTED CUPHOLDER!!!

Red Green would put a small piece of gray duct tape on the front of the cup holder to keep it shut. I had to do this when mine was broken, but if you leave it too long you'll get sticky residue on the console, which sux.

It should be called " a 20 oz plastic bottle holder" as it does a very good job at that. Give it a try. To get the bottle out just grab the top and push foward.

It's so difficult to find good craft beer in a 20 oz plastic bottle.

Hey guys,
Finally my cup holder broke too and will not stay down ...I did consider many solutions (I particular liked the sledgehammer approach by on of the authors!) ...but in the end fixed it in 30 seconds.
As I didn't find the cup holder usedfull AT ALL anyway. I simply bent e 1/2" piece of thin flat metal to about 110 degrees angle, then pushed one end up between the silver top and the release botton and eased it down.
The metal now functions as a spring and hold the devise effectively down. Problem solved!
I then bought a $10 foldout cupholder on eBay and also constructed a non-windscreen iPhone holder (navigation) ...can upload pics if anyone is interested.
2 Q's: The umbrella holder ...have you actually found an umbrella that fits there?
and 2: What is the strap on the top back on the passenger seat for?
brgds

welcome to the forum.
I have been told that the strap is used for a child restraint system. Supposed to help hold a child seat in.

Hi,
The plastic catch that holds it down breaks and the spring is then free to constantly pop it up. By removing the spring, the problem goes away.
I think the design of the cupholder is a unique work of art; to be looked at and admired but never actually used!
