Thumbs up Donut Spare Tire for Crossfire

Hi, I'm a new member, just joined, had my crossfire SRT6 about 2 months. I did my research for a spare tire for the crossfire, and I found one that fits all crossfires perfectly. It's a donut. It comes off an '04 SLK 500 Mercedes. The size of the donut tire is 155/70/17-inch. I have put it on the front and back of the crossfire - works perfectly. And it fits perfectly in the back luggage area where a tire is supposed to fit. It is the perfect height to work on both the front and back. You can call me the "Flat Tire God."

Cheers,
Jim.

Good info...but will you do with the tire that you remove?

Humm, Good point.
The Donuts won't fit in the Roadster anyways?

Jim Trimmer you are indeed the flat tire savior if not god. I have been trying to figure this out for three months, trying different Mercedes donuts on my SRT to no avail. So the donut clears the brake calipers? I guess so. Great. I take your word that it fit and I am on it.

Yes, the donut clears the brake calipers on the all models of Crossfire. I tried it on the front and back and drove around the block. It works! The tire and rim are about 4 and a half inches wide.

Cheers,
Jim

Does the 18" and 19" wheels fit in the trunk?

I put together a sheet of info on some various Crossfire tire issues, including snow tires issues & a comparison of the 155/70-17 donut spare to the stock tires sizes.

I put it in my user gallery, but the conversion to .jpg made it less than attractive.

So, I put it up on my web hosting account as a .gif and a .pdf.

Crossfire Tire Info Sheet in .gif form

Crossfire Tire Info Sheet in .pdf form

It is non-exhaustive, but I think it pulls together some needed info into one nice tight page.

Hello Display_Name

Thank you for compiling the list of tire information. NOW the quest is to find the donut for the SLK 500. Checking a variety of internet Mercedes sites, no one carries it. The dealerships want list price in my area (CT), which is over $500.

I am ready to buy a SLK 500 donut to use as a spare for my SRT6. Does anyone know if the SLK donut, which is 0.48' smaller in diameter than the stock rear tire and 0.46' larger than the front tire, will cause differential damage if used on the rear axle? Thanks...

Yes, your right, it must be an SL 500 donut although I was thinking of Jim Trimmer's and Display_Name's posts which used the description "SLK500".

I just copied my info from Jim Trimmer's post. I've yet to verify the actual vehicle the proposed 155/70-17 spare came from.

One issue: SL's have the same bolt pattern as an SLK BUT use larger diameter lug-bolts than an SLK.

SLK same as Crossfire = 12 x 1.5 (12MM pitch diameter and one thread every 1.5mm (I don't know the bolt length)).

SL has 14 x 1.5 lug bolts (14MM pitch diameter and one thread every 1.5mm (I don't know the bolt length of this one either)).

Hey there... in Jim Trimmer's post of 6.24.07 he mentions that the donut came from a 2004 SLK 500. I wonder how he dealt with the larger diameter lug bolts. I will ask...

I have the same magnaflow and have nothing but good things to say, my brother got his from ebay but I wanted a valid warranty(I have had problems with ebay sellers before) so I got it here. magnaflow 16447, or you can try one of the vendors here on the forum selling magnaflow, they are allways having sales/specials on the forums. It is nicely built and sounds great I think.

Just a thought for safety. Consider how to tie this tire down so just in case you would ever have to break really hard the things would not fly forward. Especailly in an accident. Just my 2cents.

To Whomever might Care:

I am coming back to this topic, worthwhile to me for long distance, out of the way trips (as, to the Tail of the Dragon? Or deep in the Rockies? Even out in the Ozarks?).

There seems to be a folding spare used on the SLK 350 (R171) on a 17 inch wheel which just MIGHT work on all Crossfires. Including SRT versions, with larger brakes.

Does anyone watching this happen to know? Was that temp spare from the (assumed) SL 500 necessary, or might the 17 inch folding spare for the next generation R171 SLK 350 be the right thing?

With that, it seems that the NA Crossfire could be good with the 15 inch folding spare used on SLK 280 and SLK 320 (or R170) cars.

What do you know? What do you think?

Clint

I bought mine from a 02 SLK 320 about 5 yrs. ago. It was from a salvage yd in Calif. Never on the ground. It fits both front & rear wheels on my 06 NA. I bought a cover for it on e-bay for a travel trailer. It is the collapsable tire & fits fine in my coupe trunk. The cover is gray & blends in very well with my interior color. Hope this helps.

Have you ever had to use it?
