Just got a oil change, and Chrysler changed some things up??? -
05-14-2009
, 03:35 PM
I know this has been discussed at length, I'm trying to see if anyone else encountered this too.
I'm posting from my Iphone so bare with me.
I just had my oil changed and for the first time they put in 5W40.(1081090)
Part # 5127394-ab. I believe it was Pennzoil too.
They told me that is what Chrysler recommends now. Could this be some cost savings plan for Chrysler? Seemed very odd.....
Should I keep this oil in, I know some use it but I never have.
Will my engine freak out having a newbie in her?
Thanks for any input!!

Pennzoil 5wx40 is a European oil made for our cars so stick with it. I'm using AMSOIL 5W-40, so as long as it is a synthetic oil that meets or exceeds the European standard, you're in great shape!

MB changed to 5w-30 on all of their cars, but they use Mobil 1.
We run Royal Purple 5w-20 in our car and so far so good.

I use Royal Pupple 0W-40. All's well here.
I think I read somewhere (maybe on this site) that some oil companies are planning to, or have already, stopped making 0W-40. Why? I don't know. This might be why 5W-40 is the new recommendation. But, then again, I could be way off.

Mobile1 is the recommended oil for our cars, but that's I'm sure a it's marketing arrangement, not necessarily the only one you can use. As long as it's synthetic and meets or exceeds the standard, that's all that matters.

What would you all say is the absolute best oil for the SRT-6?
Or is oil, oil??
I just talked to the parts dept, and he said it was quaker state. I think Pennzoil and QS are the same, right?

If you pop the hood there is a sticker that says Mobile-1, 0W-40.
Thats what I used (8.5 quarts)

Yeah, the manual says that or anything that matches MB 229.3, or 229.5.
Looks like advertising to me. AMsoil has tests on there site and seems better then the Mobil 1.
It is their site though....

I just bought another XFire out of one of the south central states. This one is a 2004 with 13,500 miles. The last recorded oil change was at a Chrysler dealer when the car had 11,300 miles, When I picked it up to drive back (2,000 miles) to British Columbia it was showing 226 days overdue for an oil change. The first chance I got was my stop in Salt Lake City where it took a trip to two Autozone stores to get the required 9 qts of 0W40 Mobile 1 and a suitable filter, then a trip to a Jiffy Lube to get the change made. (I like Jiffy Lube because I can watch and make certain that things get done properly..like getting all the replacemenmt O-Rings installed on the new filter).
I figure proper oil (and filter) changed when or before due is a cheap form of insurance ($135).

Funny how some high performance cars are "recommended" from the factory for Mobil 1... such as the original corvette ZR-1 and our beloved crossfires
When in doubt about things like this, just ask yourself this question: Does Chrysler (best seller of minivans, recent C11 participant) make a better recommendation than a team of German automotive engineers who specified that your engine be hand-built by a single person and boosted to 1 bar?

Driving a fast car is like having a huge penis. 90% of the time you can't use all of it, and it only impresses people who like them.

That's exactly what I was told.
My guess is because the above mentioned companies don't make 0W40 that is there reason for telling me this is the standard oil for our cars.
I have read on some MB forums that MB is doing this as well.
I believe the newer AMG engine models get 5W30, please correct if I'm wrong.

Old thread, but has anyone, anyone seen anything in writing from our beloved manufacturer stating that a new standard has been set?
I may not have ended up where I intended to go,
but I know I've ended up where I'm intended to be.

I'm no physicist, but the Crossfire's Flexible Service System (FSS) is calibrated to measure the resistive change (heavy metals) in 0W40 Mobil1 synthetic oil. I doubt if the make-up of other heavier viscosity oils would cause the FSS to blunder in its assessment of service period, but it might be something to consider.
Someone smarter than me may have the answer. Anyone?
