Default Scratches Removal -- Center console - 02-08-2010 , 02:47 PM

Just to the left of my shift nob, I have some light scratches on the silver. First, I was hoping that some one would recommend a product to remove the scratches like we do with swirl marks on our exterior paint. Second, what wax can I put on it. Should I use a quality Carnauba wax since it is not exposed to the weather, etc. Thanks.

How bad are the scratches? Can you feel them with your fingernail, or do they show the black plastic underneath the silver paint? If yes to either, you won't be able to fully remove them but in the case of the former you may be able to minimize the appearance of them.

You want to proceed cautiously though - this interior paint is likely nowhere near as stout as the exterior clear coat. Try just a cleaner wax on them first, using a soft foam applicator pad and not terry cloth. Work it in with a bit of effort, but don't scrub vigorously. If it looks like you've made any progress at all but some of the scratch is still there, do the exact same process once or twice more. If that first try with a cleaner wax doesn't do anything, then step up to something like Meguiar's ScratchX and use the same application method. Two or three times at most. If that still doesn't eliminate them, you're probably better off just living with them, or removing the offending panel and respraying it.

Any wax you like can be applied to all those silver painted surfaces on the Crossfire's interior.

Mike

Thanks so much for the advice. They are visible but not down to the black. I have some Meg's ScratchX and Meg's soft sponges. I will work on this tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks for answering the question I was afraid to cause more damage.

PS The M40 Professional Vinyl Cleaner worked great on the black band under the roadster top. Thanks again.

How did the products work? I have one small scratch on my console that draws my attention like the Grand Canyon, and would love to remove it.

I have a small black mark on the console door where it hits the back section when lifted. I need a good suggestion on how to touch up a small black spot in the silver paint. Ron

Thanks all for your help! Ron

Well Mike-in-Orange is the man and PlastiX is the product. Just got to do it since the grand kids were up for a ski weekend. It worked great on my scratches but there is a down side. Isn't there always. Well it cleaned and polished so well I had to do the entire console. I never realized how dirty my window up/down switches were until I finished. Do a small spot at a time; it took me about 30 minutes to get 98% of the scratches.

Once you are down to the dark gray you are out of luck. That means removing and repainting it. Sorry PastiX is good but it will not work miracles.

Notice I did not use the ScrathX (sp). I grabed the wrong bottle BUT it worked flawlessly. Just goes to prove even a blind squirel can find a nut.

Glad it worked out so well for you!

What you've experienced is sort of a common complaint for us. Somebody will call about a little scratch on the side of their car and ask what to use to get rid of it. Then then call us back sort of upset because, although the product removed the scratch, they now have a shiny spot on the car that makes the rest of it look bad. Then they generally ask how to fix that problem. Uh, yeah...... do the whole car now, sorry.
