Default Oil capacity question - 11-20-2009 , 09:18 PM

Specs all say Xfires take 8.5 qts oil; but at 8 qts dipstick reads full. Query whether or not to add that extra .5 qt. --B4114

If you were to take a brand new engine, add oil to the full level on the dip stick, then run the engine and recheck the oil level, I am sure that you would have to add oil to bring it back up to the full level again.
Not all of the oil would drain when the plug was removed as oil would be adhering to the inside of the engine, inside the oil ways, hydraulic lifters and in small puddles throughout the engine etc. I am sure that a pint of oil could easily be left inside the engine in this manner.
You may put in 8.5 qts at first but you would not put that in the next time.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers?

Mechanical Engineers build weapons and Civil Engineers build targets.

8 Quarts fills mine perfectly every time and I change my own oil.

1 thing people are overlooking is that the oil filter is on top of the engine, meaning that when the car is off, it all drains down. So it may show as full with only 8 quarts with the filter being empty.

As the oil is checked with the engine stationary all the time using the dipstick this really proves nothing. I stand by my statement in post #3 but specifically add oil trapped in the filter. The line from the oil pump I believe is fitted with a one-way valve, so oil past that point is trapped except oil that is subject to gravity which pulls it beyond the filter and joins the oil subject to the leak down. As air has to enter the lines to replace the oil, the leak down of oil could take a very long time and not be apparent at the dipstick until much much later.
