Talking Engine Swap #2

Time for a V8. Right now I am still in the planning and research phase. I'm looking at the Gen 3 & 4 Chevy small blocks(most likely a truck 5.3). The GTO's 6.0 has a front sump pan from the factory that will interchange. After a lot of measuring the only fitment issue I foresee is steering box interference with the headers. For the transmission I'll probably use the TH350 from my first swap. C5 & C6 Corvette motor mounts look like they may be modified to fit. A big plus is the Chevy fuel system is near identical to the crossfire, 58psi base with the regulator in the tank. I still have a lot of reading to do and probably won't get any parts till after I close on the sale of my house mid November.
It's funny a month ago I was layed off from work and looking at selling the car. This week I got a decent offer on my house and a call from Navistar asking me to come back to work.

Congrats on the call back! All the employees that took VSP left today. Its getting lonely at WHQ. I am happy to still have my job.

And of course, good luck with the build!

Thanks, I feel very lucky to have a job. After a month of hammering the internet and career center I now know first hand how bad the economy has gotten.

Chuck, those that have a job don't have a clue. No job and it's too obvious how bad things are compared to, well from 1988 until 2000 or so. Why V-8? A turbo 4 was genius. Good luck on the trail blazing. Why not a Coyote? Those things are new and promising. I've never been a Ford fan but I'm racing them now and the cars are competent and the engines are glorious.

One of my first thoughts. I just want to make sure my home sale goes through before I contacted you about them.

Can't argue with you on the Coyote performance. The 4g63 turbo could have been great had I done things a little differently. The biggest reason for the V8 is TORQUE. The second reason is TORQUE. The LS engines have an excellent reputation, are plentiful, will bolt up to the transmission in it's exact location with the same drive shaft I currently have installed. After measuring about ten times the LS should fit perfectly with the front sump oil pan. It looks like it will fit almost like the MB V8 swaps. The HPTuners software is only $499. There is virtually nothing left to guessing with the shear mass of LS swaps that have already been accomplished. It's also boost friendly(if the rear diff can hold it).

The engine mounts are too far forward on the GTO and Corvette mounts but it should be easily modified to work. I'll probably have to switch to pusher fans in front of the radiator. I think the truck exhaust manifolds will work if I flip them to front exit. There is tons of aftermarket stuff to choose from too.

As I finish up the mods to the coupe, I was just thinking, having just received a new Summit catalog how much easier working on the Chevy motors was. Parts are plentiful, mods are there for turbo/SC, etc, etc... Oh, well, we are getting close to being done, and it is what is...but, right now, I am missing my Bowtie's....Good luck, as I think you will have a handful once finished... I would highly suggest a rearend swap or at least a wavetrac upgrade... You said it yourself, torque and torque...lol

I too, am contemplating my second engine swap. I built and installed an 1800 B engine replacing my 1500 in my MGA. Now I am acquiring a salvage Crossfire drive train to put in. Ihave the room. Will upgrade brakes. Gary

I keep forgetting about tuning and that's the best reason I can think of for a GM swap. I hear the torque argument all the time. I have a 205 5.7 300C and it's not as powerful as a LS1 but I had it and my SRT-6 both on the dyno and guess which one has more torque at 2500 rpm to redline? Yep, the 6.

Sounds like its going to be lots of fun! Has anybody considered/swapped a Supra inline 6? There are a few s2000s running them with one over 900whp and most well north of 600whp.

I believe an inline 6 is too long to fit and not to mention, those built Supra inline sixers are supra expensive. I like the GM swap idea for parts and tuning availability. Chuck is a doer from what I've seen. I'm wanting to see the journey.

Makes sense, I just figured that it would possibly fit as S2000 is smaller but I guess it does have a rather long engine bay.. because you need all that room for that monster 2L four banger. Has anybody driven a stock AP1 S2000 on here (01'-03') - the car gives a whole new meaning to no torque haha.

Hmm - Really? Seems I have an old four port 13B in my 1980 RX7. The engine is naturally aspirated and 1.3 liters - pushing 220 HP. You could say your engine is the most powerful "reciprocating" engine, but the Wankel reigns supreme from a power to size perspective.

Whoever says the s2000 ever shipped with a powerful engine (or even more powerful than the M112) has clearly never driven one. The stock engine was rated at under 240hp and less than 200 ft-lbs (translation: gutless high-revving engine) and it felt every bit of that on the road. The only engine that belongs in a Crossfire is a V8, and it's a shame that Diamler had such a stranglehold on Chrysler that such a beast of an engine was out of the question.

My 2¢.
