Ashtray not staying closed. -

Has anyone ever had a problem with the ashtray not staying closed? Something must have broken off because it’s not catching when I push it in. I’m just wondering if this is going to be a big problem or a quick fix.

The '04 Coupe has the exact opposite problem: I can't get the darn thing open. I KNOW something is stuck back there but.....
you have to take off that entire central panel just to access the tray plus some other goodies. In other words, it isn't exactly easy though I'm positive some other members have done more 'exploring' back there than I'd be willing to do.
I don't smoke no mo' so the only thing I'd ever use the tray for is Nicorette/Juicy Fruit wrappers so if it doesn't open I don't really care. Your problem though would drive me nuts !
Is your car still under warranty? If so, check with the dealer.

bringin this back from the dead. I just bought an '04, has less than 50k miles, pretty clean. I use the ashtray for coins. Last week it stopped closing, it just stays open now and looks really ugly. There is no clicking when I push it in, it just comes back out. Anyone figure this one out? I wouldn't know what to look for if I started removing panels.

there is a spring type system in the assembly itself that moves in a track so that it latches when closed and unlatches when opening, it's more and likely that the spring mechanism is broken or it fell out, or the track may be damaged/worn? you may need a new one, not really sure if you can fix it or get the parts seperately? I have had mine replaced 3 times so far between both x-fires, of course under waranty

I had the same problem and it was a little piece of plastic that had broke off that held the ashtray closed. I could not find the little piece that broke off so I rigged it up so that it stays closed. I should have took some pics of it when I had it out of the car but I didnt. maybe other members have pics

Sorry but this is the beginning of the end for the cupholder. Time to change it out!
Look up the storage bin for our cars, matches the interior and serves a functional purpose!

Ashtray, cupholder? I think the storage bin is a bit large for an ashtray.
How is it one careless match can start a brushfire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?
Cheers !

A cheap fix: just hold it closed with your right hand (in USA). Not recommended with a six-speed.

Quick fix? ..... duct tape blends in well with the surroundings and if you are a smoker helps you cut down on cigs.

I have the same problem. If I'm reading it right, it looks like it's the ashtray, compartment, and insert. I'm not ready to sink $200 to keep an ashtray closed.... if I'm wrong, someone please let me know! I'd love to fix mine, too.

Mine just broke this morning... decided to see if anyone here actually knew how to fix it, but it doesn't look like it. Guess I'll be spending my Saturday tearing apart the console and trying tofix this thing. Does anyone know how much the replacement part is?

Yeah... I never fixed mine either, couldn't justify spending $200+ just to keep an ashtray closed. (I have since sold my Crossfire.) Anyway, from what I remember, it's not "just" the ashtray. It's, like, the "compartment", "insert", and "ashtray" or something like that... Here's a link that shows the diagram as well as prices for parts...

Darn,
Mine quit working this morning; will not stay closed. Has anyone tried to remove this thing and fix or replace it?

If anyone comes up with a way to R&R these ashtrays, please advise. I wedged an old business card in mine to keep it shut and it sucks!

I just replaced my ashtray this afternoon...I did it by the book which was a waste of time. After I got done I felt dumb for putting off replaceing it so long. I bet if I were to replace it again it would only take maybe 45 mins if that.

Yea, please let us know the steps involved. Did you have to take the radio out first? Thanks for any help!
