Default Oil burning off?

I changed my oil and filter yesterday. After 5,600 miles since my last change in November of 2007. I took out about 6 and 7/8 qts. I did have some leaking during the cold weather (Not a quarts worth) which subsided when I started driving in the warmer weather again. Has anyone noticed that much usage of oil between oil changes with 5000 mile intervals? I current have 24K on the car.

Hi Stan, I've never measured the exact amount that comes out. I use the topsider which holds a little more than 8 qts. and the 2 times I changed the oil it was filled to the top. Was the oil light on? It should have been on if it was that low on oil. My oil light came once after I changed the oil and it was a little less than a 1/2 qt. low.

Stan, I have noticed a little leakage at the cap. Probably nothing more than a seal that wasn't put on correctly. If I'm not mistaken, there are several seals made of rubber, in and around the filter area.

Still have 3,000 miles on it?
We'll put some on when you come down to Goddard Park. What are you going to bring to the outing?

I haven't changed my oil yet. I bought the car in the end of February with 6000 miles. Since then I've put just over 4000 miles on it. I will probably change the oil next month before the car goes into storage for the winter. I thought I read that 8 1/2 quarts was what was needed re the oil change. I suppose I could take out the owner's manual and check, if it wasn't raining right now.

Stan is it difficult to change the oil? Where do you buy your filters? I am tired of paying 140 per oil change... i have a friend ( ex BF) who will change it for me... but it seems to cost almost the same for the filter.. 30$ ... and 8$ per qt oil?

any ideas?

Hey Jen where have you been we all thought you fell off the planet. You can buy the filter in Pepboys for about $12.00 and you can buy the oil in Walmart for 5 or 6 bucks a quart for Mobil 1.

If you don't want to do it yourself, Midas does it for about $95.00 including tax. Robby is right too, I generally buy it at Advance for $6.00 qt and you can buy filters on eBay real cheap.

The actual oil change is very easy. No different then any other car.Remove a panel pull the plug and change the filter. Any competent, mechanically inclined person should be able to do it in 20 minutes.

Jen,
Just to re-iterate what they said. I purchased the Benz, paper filters off eBay for some ridiculously low price. I bought a 3-pack. Each filter comes with new seals. I see no need in getting a more expensive fleece filter because I don't drive the car too much and I don't drive it hard on a full-time basis. If I had an SRT-6 I would use the fleece filters.
I also check in the automotive section of Walmart every time I go to one. They will sometimes have the Mobil1, 0-W40. Usually only 6 or 12 qts. at a time. So you have to be diligent about looking for the stuff. it's usually around $5.60 per quart. I always buy 9 of them.
You will have to jack up the car to get to the drain plug. The oil change is easy to do after the first time. Really, the hardest part is jacking the car and removing the engine cover from the bottom of the engine. The messiest part is removing the filter from the stem and changing the seals on the stem.
My garage is open to you if you would like to come over sometime to do the oil change.
Stan
