Default The Ultimate Factory "sleepers" - 12-16-2008 , 09:29 PM

Since the "most beautiful" and "fugliest" threads seem to have run their course, I thought I'd start a
Top "Sleepers" thread. For those that do not know, a "sleeper" is a car that looks like a grocery getter, but hauls butt ! I start.......

My son just sold his 80's GLH with a t3t4 turbo and it hauled butt! He also sold his Lancer Shelby several months ago. Now just owns an SRT-4.

Anyway, remember the 'K' cars? Well the Dodge Spirit R/T was a real sleeper with 224 turbocharged HP!

THE ORIGINAL SRT-4!!!! The car below is owned by a guy named Wallace and with his upgrades, he put down 421 wheel hp and 457 lb-ft of torque at 21 psi! Now that my friends, is a REAL sleeper of a grocery getter!

1955 Desoto with Hemi V8 engine

My Grandad had one of these in a coral and white combo ... he'd originally wanted a Corvette, but my Gram assured him that if he got one that she'd not ride in it .... he got one of these and the damn thing could really haul a$$ ... she never knew ....

I thought of him the day I bought my Crossfire ...

I would think these surprised more than a few musclecar owners in their day.

'57 Rambler Rebel. A guy in town had one of these. Was constantly surprising the small block Chevy's. Those Chevy guys just couldn't believe that a Rambler would kick their butts.

I read this post and immediately began hearing the music and lyrics to a 50s era hit song ...

BEEP BEEP
The Playmates - 1958

(very slowly)
Beep beep, beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep
While riding in my Cadillac
What to my surprise
A little Nash Rambler was following me
About one third my size
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(slowly)
I pushed my foot down to the floor
To give the guy the shake
But the little Nash Rambler stayed right behind
He still had on his brake
He musta thought his car had more guts
As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(normal speed)
My car went into passing gear
And we took off with gust (whoosh)
Soon we were going ninety
Musta left him in the dust
When I peeked in the mirror of my car
I couldn't believe my eyes
The little Nash Rambler was right behind
You'd think that guy could fly
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(quickly)
Now we were doing a hundred and ten
This certainly was a race
For a Rambler to pass a Caddy
Would be a big disgrace
The guy musta wanted to pass me up
As he kept on tooting his horn (beep beep)
I'll show him that a Cadillac is not a car to scorn
Beep beep beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep

(very quickly)
Now we're going a hundred twenty
As fast as I can go
The Rambler pulled along side of me
As if we were going slow
The fella rolled down his window
And yelled for me to hear
"Hey buddy how do I get this car outa
second gear?"

Am I the only one who just started to hum the song "hot-rod Lincoln"?

EDIT:

My pappy said "Son your gonna drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln"

Have you heard the story of the hot rod race
Where the Fords and Lincolns were settin' the pace?
That story is true I'm here to say
I was drivin' that model A.

It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up
That a Model A body makes it look like a pup
It's got eight cylinders and uses 'em all
Got overdrive, just won't stall

With a four barrel carb and dual exhausts
With four-eleven gears you can really get lost
Got safety tubes, but I ain't scared
The brakes are good, the tires fair

Pulled out of San Pedro late one night
And the moon and the stars were shining bright
We was drivin' up Grapevine Hill
Passin' cars like they was standing still

All of a sudden, in the wink of an eye
A Cadillac sedan passed us by
I said, "Boys, that's a mark for me!"
By then the tail lights was all you could see

Now the fellas ribbed me for being behind
So thought I'd make the Lincoln unwind
Took my foot of the gas and man alive
I shoved it on down into over drive

Wound it up to a-hundred-and-ten
My speedometer said that I hit top end
My foot was glued like lead to the floor
That's all there is and there ain't no more

Now the boys all thought that I'd lost my sense
And telephone poles looked like a picket fence
They said "Slow down, I see spots!"
The lines on the road just looked like dots

Took a corner, Side-Swiped a truck
Crossed my fingers just for luck My Fenders was clickin' the guard rail posts
The guy beside me was white as a ghost

Smoke was coming from outta of the back
When I started to gain on that Cadillac
Knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass
Don't ya know by then we'd be low on gas?

Had flames comin' from outta the side
Feel the tension, man what a ride
I said "Look out boys, I've got a license to fly"
And that Caddy pulled over and let us by

Now all of the sudden she started to knockin'
And down in a dips she started to rockin'
I looked in the mirror, a red light was blinkin'
The cops was after my Hot Rod Lincoln

They arrested me and they put me in jail
And called my pappy to throw my bail
He said "Son, you're gonna to drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop drivin' that Hot Rod Lincoln"

Less than 1800 lbs with a 100HP DOHC 1.3. Forged crank & rods, aluminum block and head, hollow cams. Four wheel disk brakes, front & rear sway bars.

Not the fastest but it WILL surprise you! Especially in the corners.

It is no longer a Volvo. It is now a bastardized son of a Corvette powered by the smashed hopes and dreams of little children, turbo's harvested from the loins of metal demons and an LS1 forged by Satan.

There's a guy on my PT Cruiser forum who heavily built the factory turbo engine in his PT GT and has run a high 11 second 1/4 mile with it. That run was with 430WHP and NO nitrous. And it's his daily driver. With a nitrous spray he dyno'd at 599WHP and 667lb-ft on stock internals. That's a hell of a little motor!

He has since swapped engines to a 2.6L stroker and is shooting for well over 500WHP without spray, 800WHP with the juice.

Perhaps, but nobody expects an 11 second PT Cruiser and that is, after all, the point of this thread, isn't it?
