1974 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000
I've been hunting for a classic little European sports car for several years, never quite sure exactly what I really wanted. Had my heart set on an Austin Healey 3000 for a while but I hesitated too many times and now they're too damn expensive. Thought about something British, but the MGBs and Triumphs didn't really pull strongly enough at the heart strings. A TR6 and an MGB GT both came close, but quite close enough. I pondered a BMW 2002 and a Lancia Beta Scorpion (Montecarlo in Europe) but missed them both. Then I started concentrating on pre-1975 cars only so it wouldn't have to go through the semi annual smog check here in California. And I started zeroing in on Italians cars.
Last week I stumbled onto this car, a 1974 Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 - it was the right price and it looked great in pictures. I did some more research and stumbled on to what looked like an identical ad for the car on the Alfa forum, which lead me to the former owner - the most highly regarded classic Alfa shop on the West Coast. I called the guy and had a long chat with him. He told me everything that he did to the car during his short ownership after having purchased the car from it's original owner. He said he would jump in this car and drive it from LA to NY without hesitation. He even did a pre-purchase inspection on the car for a couple up in LA who decided to go a different route and he shared that info with me for free (talk about getting lucky!!). He said the only thing it needs is some fluid changes in the next 6 months or so.
I made the deal and now she's all mine!! (oh, not to worry, I still have both Crossfires and that won't be changing any time soon!)
