Not that jets aren't cool, but I agree with Maxwell, WWII era piston-engined airplane music is way better than jet engines. Any clips of a supercharged twin engined P-38 Lightning at full song?

The Jet vs Piston sound comparison is similar to comparing the ear splitting sound of a modern F1 engine to the engines from the N/A 3 litre era. Eventhough the modern F1 engines are technical marvels, the hi-pitched engine note is not that pleasing to the ear. Heck even the old Indy Roadsters with Offys sound better than the modern Indy engines.

Speaking of F1, the safetycar and the medical car engines ( AMG Mercedes by the way ) sound way better than the F1 cars.

Too lazy to look up specifics right now but read that a company in Germany is building FW 190 replicas.

Thanks Stogey, I'd love to ride with these guy's if I could stand the G's.

Love the sound of those radial engines Maxwell.

Am I the only one that gets goosebumps at an air show? I even get them watching these video clips. My wife made fun of me onetime when we went to Indy for the time trials and we were about a block away from the track and when I heard the cars I got goosebumps.

Ever imagine the almost unlimited power that these jets have? Could you imagine taking the Crossfire up to 150 MPH, pulling back on the steering wheel kicking in an afterburner and going straight up? Thats a mod I could go for.

I agree that the piston engine Warbirds have a Mystic all to themselves. I remember being at a Ghost Squadron air show down in Houston and the awesome sound of the big V-12 Allisons ! Sooooooo here ya go ! Glacier Girl P-38 Lightining and Miss Velma P-51 Mustang doing a fly over.
CRANK UP THE SOUND !

Incidentally, if you would like to actually fly a P-51 Mustang, yep I said fly, go to Airshowbuzz.com and do a search on Stallion 51. Duel control P-51 Mustangs based outta Kissamee Florida.

Enjoy

During the 1960s the US (Air Force) had FIVE (5) Aircraft capable of sustained flight in excess of 60,000 feet. Name Them and their purpose!

Lets see how bad I can do - and I consider myself an airplane guy!

XB-70 bomber
U-2 reconnaisance
B-57 bomber (thanks for the avatar!)
F-104 fighter
SR-71 reconnaisance (would have been the RS-71 except a president transposed the letters during a speech and nobody corrected him, or so I've read)

Good shot Brent,
XB-70 Valkyrie, 2 built, 1 crashed during media circus, other in USAF Museum WPAFB. Never operational.
U-2 single engine , single seat Reccy Flown by Sac and CIA. More than one shot down. Still flying overflights IRAQ as TR-1 Dragon Lady. (Also a 2 seat version)
RB-57D flown by Nationalist China several shot down, flown by USAF as Nuclear Test Sampler. Grounded because of wings failing.
RB/WB-57F,(Avatar) Longwing, 2 crew, 4 engine, Upper atmoshpheric sampling, Photo Reccy, 1 shot down over Black Sea. Flown by USAF, Pakistan, and NASA for NOAA and Shuttle Tracking. (Retired from USAF 1975, 2 NASA planes flying in late '90s)
SR-71 (Strategic Reconnaissance) USAF/SAC, Highest, Fastest, BESTEST, 2 seat. Lack of funding to keep flying. On static display all over.
A-12 single seat, similar to SR-71, flown by CIA.
F-104C and B-58 did not see high altitude service.
Many Aircraft could "Zoom" to altitude, but only a few could sustain flight at altitude.

Really like your Bonnet.
SR-71 Blackbird and U-2 (U-bird, now TR-1 DragonLady) were the most well known.
The RB-57D and RB-57F (Highly modified Canberras) were 2 lesser known High Altitude Reccys. The WB-57F flown by NASA into the 1990s have been retired, and only to my knowledge the Dragon Ladys are still available.
A highly classified A-12, single seat aircraft, similar to the SR-71 was flown by the CIA for a short period. All fascinating planes.
My Avatar is an RB/WB-57F, 4 engine, 2 seat multi mission aircraft.

I thought the B-57 could cruise at 60 plus and didn't think of the recon version at all. Did think about the A-12 but considered it covered by the Blackbird. NASA used I think three modified 104s that could fly high so I took a guess that the Air Force version was almost as capable.

What civilian aircraft has had the largest production run?

My best guess would be the DC-3 (aka C-47)
I believe the 104s you mention were X-15 chase planes, but not for long
There were other USAF Fighters that could top 60 but couldn't stay there, ie F 106. Public releases on the YF-12A as the ultimate fighter interceptor were (I believe) cover stories for the A-12 CIA single seat Blackbird.
