Ignition key won't turn

The car has never seen any rain or foul weather. You can still see the factory chalk marks underneath on the chassis.
My Crossfire was a daily driver but it sits in the garage more now. I have to make it a point to drive it about 50 miles once a week or every 2 weeks. If I don't give it a good run every 2 weeks I feel really bad for the car.

Re: Ignition key won't turn
It now has just over 10 k miles and is awaiting a new ignition key cylinder at local Dealership...Got towed in on Black Dog Friday...If it gets so I can START the car, I'll KEEP on keeping on putting pedal to metal.
If anyone is having ANY problems turning your key, do not like I did put off having it fixed or you may suddenly end up stick...Fortunately, mine got stuck while at home.

Re: Ignition key won't turn
Awaiting mail delivery of the part-Certainly hope it never happens again...Never owned a car this new and to have it SUDDENLY be unable to start or turn its steering wheel was a major catastrophe. I have read several comments in the forum indicating my CF is not alone in the ignition switch snafu.

Re: Ignition key won't turn
My car has been in the shop at a new dealer in Albuquerque since Friday November 27th the day after I first posted here re: key won't turn. This Friday will be three full weeks if it is still there...The car had only 10 k miles on it and nothing at all wrong...The whole dash had to be taken out to get to key cyllinder and some switch that burned out. It was oput back together this week only to now have the cluster lights not work and then a squeaky steering wheel supposedly a Clock Spring (?) that may have to be ordered.
I fell pretty defeated by all of this. Chrysler's tow-in service worked well--the car remains under warranty for all of this--my level of trust for this dealership is sliding along with wondering where I am iun the order of 'importance' to be fixed. I hope that soon I can report getting the car back and no hassles with the bill.
You'd think a loaner car or at least a free car detailing might be in the offing at this point. I fell that my 'new car' is not going to be so NEW after this 'surgery'.
Once again, if any of you are having the slightest bit of trouble turning your ignition key, have it looked at even if they say well it's not broken yet!

Re: Ignition key won't turn
Please don't think this is an isolated incident. It's not. My crossfire has 50,000 miles on it. The first time the key was stuck, I was at home. I had to have it towed to a dealership. When it got there, they were able to jiggle the key enough to get it to start. I thought it might be an isolated incident too, and just made sure to straighten out my wheels before turning off my car.
The next time it happened it left me stranded. I had to tow it at my cost as the warranty did not cover a second towing. The key lock cylinder now has to be replaced, along with the key. The dealership also had to order an extra part to fix it (don't even know what this is). All of this at a cost around $700. They have had to call in an ignition specialist to even get the ignition out of my car.
If you have a Crossfire, it is very likely you will have to have this replaced. At the first sign it is doing this, get it replaced or you will end up stranded too.

Re: Ignition key won't turn
Thank you for this comment...The good news is my car was under warranty (now is not) and while in shop all that you mention was done to the ignition and cylinder head plus had to fix a thing in steering wheel dealer tech broke...It ttok a long time-Chrysler did pay for the first tow on Thanksgiving weekend...The dealer also fixed a wind noise on door frame and several small warranty issues before in February my warranty ended.
It was amazing to have driven all my life old cars...then to have one under 10 k miles to be stuck instantaneously on Thanksgiving Day...Forced me to fix some things along the way...Took a long time with much part orderng with me paying for some shipping.
I kinda became a 'regular' with the transport people and with tech and mechanic...I would not want to go through this again and my confidence in the car was deeply shaken...I am back to LOVING the car now however...

But an ignition specialist??? No no no.. I work on Volvo's and the ignition cylinder is almost the same, except I only have to drill out two security bolts on the XC90's so a little easier.

See: post #113 of "Sticky Ignition Key fix"
You do need to fix this but you don't need keys or ignition switches - the problem is the steering lock housing. You can replace it or fix it yourself for free - instructions in above post.
rekcah took his apart after fixing it and made a PDF file with step by step directions just to help out anyone who wanted to see how it's done. He has instructions for each situation - replacing, fixing the old one and drilling out the pin if you waited too long and can't turn the key. Might want to send it to your dealer...

Re: Ignition key won't turn
Let the wife take the car to work the other day while I took hers in to have the oil changed...At 4PM recieved a call from her saying the ignition switch woun't turn...I arrived at the seen and tried many times but couldn't get it to turn either...Call a tow truck to come get it and went he arrived and I explained what was wrong, he got in the car and within 5 sceonds he started the car...He said that 80% of his calls are about Chrysler Ignitions Switches...All he did was wiggle the key and the steering wheel at the same time...Don't know what to do at this point maybe just live with it...Think there S/B a recall on this item but don't no how or who to contact about getting some action on this issue...

Dennis,
Just fix it yourself with the PDF file on this site. If you don't want to do it yourself, print the PDF out and take it to someone you trust. If they have never worked on an XF, but do work on cars, the PDF will tell them all they need to know!
Don't throw away $100's at a dealership.
