re: Camshaft position sensor: DIY replacement with pics
Hi all, new 2004 Crossfire owner here, WAHOO....
I have a 2004 Crossfire Limited, auto, hardtop.
Ok, so I have read through about how the engine suddenly dies, allowed to cool, restarts and on you go..... well experiencing the same thing. I plugged in my handy dandy OBD II PocketScan Code Reader (this time) as the "Check Engine" light was still on and got multiple readings.
1) P0335 Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
This is the code showing up after the engine has died and restarts.
2) P0410 Secondary Air Induction Malfunction
This code randomly shows up after a hard acceleration and deacceleration moment, not all times, intermittently.
3) P0730 Gear Ratio Incorrect
This one is new to me, although I will add that it is time to replace the rear tires, would this have anything to do with it, this code just showed up for the first time.
Now the "Check Engine" only comes on at random AND when the "engine dies" syndrome. It does restart but at it's liesure, not really any logical point. It does not seem to be affected by heat, although the intervals the engine dies has become more frequent.
That said, I would appreciate any and all feedback on similiar issues. I am fluid with most all tools, have rebuilt many a Chevy small block and big blocks(boy, miss those) so am ready to tackle this problem also.
Thanks for all the anticipated responses.

When you are new it is best to show that you are willing by looking at what has been answered already.
You will find the complete repair manuals and a lot of other manuals on this post. https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...tml#post111722
Download what you want to your computer and you are set for any repair.
Do not be misled by the SRT6 title, all the manuals, parts lists etc are there.

Your P0335 code is NOT for the CAMshaft sensor... but IS for the CRANKshaft position sensor... and your symptoms match the code.... it is an easy DYI... there is a sticky at the top of the Technical&Modifications section that has all the info.....
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...on-sensor.html
Doing a search on the other codes will get you similar input... welcome to the group...

So my question is, the sensor at the back of the left head is for the cam? My engine code was crankshaft sensor, which I thought was at the front of the motor? What am I missing here?
My guess is with the location on the head, this thing is the for the camshaft, and that the text was just mislabeled. Am I right? If so, is there another writeup for the crankshaft position sensor?
Re: Camshaft position sensor: DIY replacement with pics
Now I am a bit confused. The link to the "camshaft position sensor" is great with a really good write up - but when you go to it the caption at the top of the page says "crankshaft position sensor".

The CAMSHAFT sensor is at the front passenger side on the head.
post #7 is for the CAMSHAFT sensor.
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...or-replace.pdf is the CRANKSHAFT sensor.

Re: Camshaft position sensor: DIY replacement with pics
Anyone have luck with this ebay camshaft sensor? I received mine, but there is no exposed metal on the end like the OEM part has and it started throwing catalytic converter codes until I swapped it back for my original. I noticed the same seller has a separate listing for a crossfire camshaft.. wanted to make sure I bought the proper part......
When it comes to electrical parts, I usualy recommend getting the OEM one from a dealership.
However, PelicanParts.com has a few options and Bosch is the OEM supplier.

Re: Camshaft position sensor: DIY replacement with pics
I'm bringing her back from the dead.
I ordered a generic sensor over a year ago. It was **** right out of the box, throwing CAT below efficiency threshold codes on all 4 banks (0432 0422 etc?). I replaced with a Bosch.
13 months later, I have the camshaft sensor code again. I know better, so I order a Bosch again.
Install.. 40 miles later, I have the 4 below efficiency codes AGAIN.
Can I seriously have dealt with 4 bad sensors already? The last one was good for about 25,000 miles. This one.. 40?
Re: Camshaft position sensor: DIY replacement with pics
Check the CPS connector, scratch up the 2 contacts with something and see if that fixes it.
Use some dialectric grease to prevent further corrosion.
You should be able to meter the sensor, should be real close to 0 ohms as it is nothing but wire wrapped around a magnet.
My first exposure to these was back in the early 70's when they were on a high speed card punch I used to maintain. They were called "reluctance head pickups" back then.
I used one of those on my modified Yamaha flat track bike in a total loss ignition system to trigger a power transistor. It was mounted next to a circular plate on the crankshaft that I had cut one 1/4" notch in. Worked flawlessly.
The CAMSHAFT sensor on the other hand is a "Hall Effect" sensor. In layman's terms, it is a transistor that is excited by a magnet in the camshaft as it passes by causing it to conduct.
These were also used in older computer keyboards made by Cherry. ( no key bounce due to dirty contacts. )
This was back in the day before throw-away keyboards.

Hi Guys ,
See a lot of iHistory nfo .. going back last few years
On No Start issues ..
Can i conclude that if I have still no start issues after
FIX 1 = RCM , resoldering
FIX 2 = CPS , Replacing with New Bosch cps
FIX 3 ?
That next step is to replace
ECR Engine Control relay ( P/N ??##### TBA ? please )
FIX 4 ?
Replace entire RCM if FIX 3 dosent work ? ( Is it the Merc K70 ref ?)
( P/N ??##### TBA ? please )
FIX 5 ?
Cam shaft sensor ?
-------------------------------
HEADLIGHT opaque /sun damage ?
Repair or replace?
Also can anyone help on New Headlight Plastic , replacements ?
Cheers Steve UK Sept 2016
PS love the Shape by Karmann , not the Merc elec,s
But getting ready to scrape it soon if RCM/or ECR doesn’t fix it

Tighed1 replaces the relay, fixes the bad soldering and whatever else is needed.
Fix #3 is the cheapest unless you can get a cheap RCM.
You did good on your research using the Search feature, not many do.
Repair the headlight with a kit made for the job, a bit of wok to do correctly but as you cannot replace just the lens you have no other option. Used ones cost good bucks and new ones go from $6oo.

Re: Camshaft position sensor: DIY replacement with pics
i have been looking for bosch brand for my 2005 coupe limited but the only 1 i found that tells fits it is this:
or is this as good?
i was asking for bosch as per this: 5) Replace the crank position sensor with the real Bosch part and put the working one in the glove box with the tools to replace it. https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...or-photos.html
it is for crankshaft sensor but i was trying to get same brand for the camshaft sensor.
thanks

any advice on how to find a bosch instead that fits?or is this as good?

That is a cheap Chinese knockoff. Go to German Auto Supply:
