Hey Guys,

2004 N/A with 70k miles.

It shuts off and won't restart until it's sat for at least an hour. Wet oiley discharge in the tail pipes! When it does start my wife says that there is a puff of blue smoke out of the exhaust but it dissipates quickly. The car seems to run smoothly. It will stop without any odd sounds or loss of power, just shuts off in about 20 minutes run time. The starter engages and turns the engine over and does not start the car.

Has anyone seen this before?

I just did an oil change about 500 miles ago. Been running great. No issues. Always started and ran strong. That is until this Sunday. After driving around all day doing stuff, it was sleeting/snowing right at freezing. I thought it was

Won't address your oil/smoke issue, but it may fix your car dieing problem.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look at that after work.

The "oil" is not what I would expect. It's thin and more like "carbon soot water" than oil because it's not slippery between my fingers. It's hard to explain.

The engine dieing and "oil/carbon soot water" showed up at the same time but I haven't looked at my exhaust pipe closely in a while. I suspect they are related. I do wonder if the dark discharge from the exhaust is related to the sleet/snow weather I was driving in the day the car shut off.

If it's not the relay control board, I'll have to take it in to a shop for repair. Before that I plan on getting the codes from the computer at the local auto parts store. At least that way I'll know what it could be going to the garage.

I'll try to take some pics when home.

 

dumb question, but have you checked the air filters lately ?
Seems if they get really clogged, might make engine suck in more oil vapor due to increased vacuum at the throttle body ?

 

not dumb..... I haven't looked at them in about 45k. I'll add this to the things to check tonight.

Good suggestion and worth checking at any rate.

 

Im kinda thinking Crankshaft Position Sensor. They seem to get temperature - sensitive with age.
Get a BOSCH replacement, you can get them online for about $45. I don't think the oily/sooty exhaust and this trouble will be found to be related in the end. Just my hunch.

Having the same issue
Have had crank shift sensor replace,control module and wire harness and still same problem this is all I'm seeing on the forum as well.my best advice to u is to report to NHTSA # 1-800-424-9393 if enough people with this issue is reported maybe we can get a recall. Please pass along the forum
