I have an 04 that blows fuse number 7 every time I turn the key to on. Not even to start. With me BCM removed it doesn't happen so it's somewhere in that circuit. Which if it's after the BCM it could literally be anywhere. Any suggestions on trying to find this short. Thanks.

Very hard to track down a short like this. I would get the pinout of the BCM (IF that is the ONLY thing fed from fuse 7), review all the individual systems switched by it, and then systematically isolate/check each circuit using both the schematic AND MOST IMPORTANT, usual trouble parts that are well known. This will take time, a systematic approach, and LUCK. Good luck, I do not envy your situation.


I wonder if plugging in a salvage BCM (just for a test), would help determine if the BCM is the fault location? I don't have enough experience in this regard. It might help determine if you have a bad BCM, as I read some posts.

Replace fuse #7 with a 12v light bulb.
Unplug from the BCM one connector at a time till the bulb goes dim or out.
Trace it from there.

 

Xfire not sure how to do that especially since the BCM is on big connector. What I did do was shoot each pin to ground to see if anything is reading continuity to ground. I have found 5 pins that have continuity with ground that I don't believe should, at lest by my knowledge of the system and diagram.

1. Central locking/pump and security system module
2. Instrument cluster wake up
3. Spoiler limit switch up (disregard)
4. Turn signal monitored ground (disregard)
5. Washer pump motor control (disregard)

The spoiler is in the up position and is actuating the little switch on the left side which I believe is the up and even with it disconnected it still blew fuse 7. So I think I'm good to eliminate that one. (Is there a way to force the spoiler back down, by hand not by switch?)

Disregard turn signal ground, damn turn signal switch was on.


Disregard the Washer Pump Motor because its always grounded

Any thoughts?

 

Never been there, but is there a way to remove individual pins from the connectors to isolate if they are the issue ?

 

Not that I'm comfortable with. I eliminated the turn signal one. Only three left. Also on the BCM the diagram says cavity 31 should have a pin for lift gate lock sense but mine does not.

 

I'm at a loss right now. I wish I had a schematic of the BCM. The power coming from fuse 7 is most likely only used for specific functions of the BCM, not all of them. If I knew which ones it would be easier to narrow down and hopefully find.

 

Check for water in the trunk around the central lock unit.

 

I will check that next. Here is a list of every line going in or out of the BCM broken into like systems. Theoretically one of these (or more than one ) will have a short that is causing the fuse to pop. Just not sure which one.

I, like you wouldn't know where to start though.
Feel like blowing $65 ? You can get a BCM from fleabay, and although I am pretty sure it has to be coded to your VIN to work, you could at least see if it stops the blown fuse problem. ( if it's an INTERNAL short )

Thanks fire. Unfortunately I already blew that money on that very idea. New bcm didn't change it. My guess is it's either the monitored ground for turn signals because my right front turn signal doesn't work (good bulb) or one of the spoiler circuits because it's stuck up and nothing works on it.

 

oky dokey. Then those are probably pretty good guesses.

 

What I would really appreciate is if someone with a 2004 coupe in great working order would take a pic of their underhood fuse box installed in their car. There are discrepancies between the Service manual, owners manual and what is in my car. IE The 30 Amp fuse that the service manual says should be in socket 4 for power distribution to the BCM, in my car that circuit and fuse is in socket 16, which the service manual has as a spare and the owners manual has as a 10amp spoiler motor circuit.

 

For things like this I think a search of eBay and a look at the photos found in a search for fuse boxes will give a clearer picture than just one photo.

Curious; what did you find here? Any evidence of current/prior water intrusion?

 

Sorry never got a chance to check yet. Have other issues I'm trying to get fixed that are preventing me from driving it. I will definitely reattack this next week hopefully when I get a drivable car back.

 

Checked for water, it's dry. Maybe had water a while ago or something leaked inside the cargo area but there's no water.
