The info I had was that 1st digit position indicated country of origin. And Chrysler was given permission by FEDS to use a "1" which indicated that the car was built by Daimler-Chrysler. More of a manufacturer designation than country of origin.

And my 07 XFire has an "L" in position 4. The safety constraint system was somewhat different (Restraint System Advanced Multistage Front Air Bags).

Position 6 was a "6" which indicated an "S" series vehicle, which usually indicated it was a Crossfire. Seemed kind of redundant because Position 5 indicated whether it was LHD (N) or RHD (P) Crossfire version. If the car was assembled for international markets, then this position indicated transmission type (C = manual; E = AutoStick). (Much more logical)

Position 7 was body style (conv = 5; coupe = 9).

Keep in mind I'm referencing a 2007 Model Year VIN breakdown. With the earlier models, including SRT6's, there probably was another legend to follow.

I think all the Crossfires were assembled by Karmann at the plant in Osnabruck, Germany. Engines & parts were sourced from various vendors & locations. But everything was put together by Karmann.

Position 6= model option 5 = Base or SE, 6 = Limited & 7 = SRT-6
