How to: Replace Clutch in '04 Coupe
Re: How to: Replace Clutch in '04 Coupe
I just changed mine out 2 months ago at 150K. The clutch had a couple of hot spots (not too bad)but the throw bearing was pretty much shot. You can hear it when the clutch is released and it sounds like noisy valves. If you press down on the clutch about an inch and the sound goes away, it tells you that you throw out bearing is going bad. There was an oil leak that found its way onto the flywheel which made it slip a little. Once the new cluch and throw bearing was installed and the oil leak was fixed the car had a nice grab to it when you shift at high RPMs....wahoo!

Cool, I'm only at 90K so I guess I have a bit of time, I'll probably just order a kit in the next few months just to have on hand.

Haven't done a Crossfire clutch yet but on other cars I use a plastic clutch alignment tool to align the disk to the pilot bushing when tightening the pressure plate. Makes getting the tranny in easy. Looks like one comes with at least one of the kits.
Can also have somone depress the clutch while wiggling the trans but is easier when aligned to begin with.
ps trying to pull the trans in with the bolts is a good way to break e$pen$ive things.

LMAO
Honestly 10" would be cutting it really close. Probably possible, but more difficult than say 2'. 2' you'd have play room.

No problem, it just makes it so much easier to disconnect the driveshaft, bell housing and roll it out all the way. With the trans completely out of the way you aren't cramped holding that heavy as hell clutch above you. And you can see with the key better.

The pilot bearing. Leave it or is there a better tool to remove it?
Re: How to: Replace Clutch in '04 Coupe
I just looked back and noticed you mentioned a better flywheel. Supposedly you can use a single mass from certain newer Dodge models. Is it "better", I'm not sure because the dual mass keeps it as smooth as possible. Sure the single would be a whole hell of a lot lighter, but give and take I guess.
I can confirm that Rudy is re-designing flywheel's for us to use from another car so that I can have one strong enough to hold the 55K motor.. there at least lol.

Thanks buddy, I've got the LUK on order now, research only showed them and Exedy re badge parts but are overall the same.
The flywheel will stay, I'll just scuff and clean it, though a single mass is very VERY tempting. I look forward to his progress.

Nice. That's the conclusion I came to too.
Single would be very tempting to me too as long as it's 650-700 ft-lb capable, with a clutch to match.
