Just viewing a few xf's on auto trader & noticed a few have no annoying cup holder & have been replaced by a coin tray type thing?.
Now most were same aged models as mine so how come some had trays, & some had the worlds most annoying cup holder?.

Base models came with no cup holder, some people had their cup holder replaced by the bin under warranty and others preferred the bin to the cup holder and purchased it.
They were made for the Crossfire.
They cost an arm and a leg to buy. For those unwilling to pay the $60 or so there is a bin for a Saturn that can be fitted with some modifications.
For the UK market the 2004 and early 2005 cars came with the cup holder standard, but from mid 2005 the bin was standard.
That was a smart move they made at that time. However in NA a car with no cup holder would be viewed as missing a most important item and frowned on. It is a useless item in the most awkward spot, particularly with a manual tranny car.
