Question Airbag light permenantly on... HELP ! failed mot :-(

Hi All

please could anyone advise if there are any other garages apart from main dealers in the midlands area that can have a look at my airbag system
I put my 2005 roadster through an MOT last week and she failed on the airbag light being on, naivley I thought this would not be such a big deal to fix HOW WRONG WAS I !!!

I have had it in 2 garages to have the diagnostics done but their computers won't talk to the airbag system, they have both had a look to see if they can see anything wrong with the wiring but they can't find anything obvious :-( fortunatley they were very nice and didn't charge me for this :-)

they both advised me to see if Chrysler will try to reset it, so on Friday off I went to Chrysler in Derby, I asked them if they could reset my airbag light, they had it for about one and a half hours and came back to me saying the system was throwing up error codes for both the driver and the passenger airbags had anyone been messing with them, I just told them I had it plugged in at other garages to find out the error codes and that's all, they then said they needed it again for about 3 hours so they can strip the seats out to look at the wiring, they didn't actually tell me if they had attempted a reset

Now a bit of background as to why i think the light may have come on, which I did tell Chrysler,

I've not had a bump so it can't be that, but a few months ago I had water coming in the passenger footwell I think it might be the drainage problem when it rains and pipe maybe blocked so it overflows into the footwell, well since then my stereo speakers have been crackling and going off and on intermittantly and then my airbag light started to flicker and has eventually decided to stay on permenantly, so I'm wondering if this water might have interfered with the airbag wiring

Unfortunatley I'm a bit loathed to send her to a main dealer as I have been ripped off before by a ford main dealer many years ago, and I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling from the Derby dealer, I asked them for an estimate of how much it will cost for them to have her for 3 hours to take the seats out to check the wiring and I'm still waiting for the answer !

So if there is anyone out there in the Derby / Midlands area that is specialises in Crossfires I would much prefer to take it to them to have a look at, the only problem being I need to have it sorted before next Monday to put it back in for the MOT Retest

Help, advice or just the name of a good repair place would be much appreciated

hi..might be worth a ring Airbag Man - Vehicle Accident Repair & Automotive Diagnostics i know they are not near you but might be able to advise or know of someone in your area who can help you...not used them myself but know somebody who was helped by them...the waterleak problem is most proberly the drain pipe on the scuttle panel you have to take off the plastic panel where the wipers are and clean out the drain tube most likely clogged up with leaves or something...chris

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for your advice, much appreciated :-) I will get the drain pipe looked at definatley, I actually had a stroke of luck last night and found a garage local to me, they have the correct system to get through to the airbags and have confirmed both drivers and passenger are coming up with faults, they had a quick look under the seats and found my drivers side has a wire has snapped but couldn't locate the problem for passenger, but it was past their closing time, so I was very lucky that they looked at it at all ! :-P

They did try to clear the errors but they wouldn't clear, I have now booked it in with them as they do need to take the seats out as the fault codes are for the wires underneath.

Now I forsee alot of people coming across this problem as it's now an MOT Fail, Chrysler eventually quoted ( I Had to chase them up ! ) for the 3 hours labour to take seats out at £79.00 per Hour & £80.00 for Diagnostic !! And then there would of been the cost of parts and more labour !!
The Independant garage I have found has quoted me £100.00 to take the seats out & £20.00 for the diagnostic, Saving £200.00 !!!
So if anyone would like anymore information on the garage I've found in Burton on Trent, please inbox me and I'd be happy to help :-)
G :-)

Hi Issymyakee,
What ultimately was the problem and how was it fixed?
Regards, Jim.

Hi Jim, under the passenger seat the airbag sensor was the problem, along with the snapped cable under the drivers side seat for the other airbag sensor, I orderd new ones off eBay from a Mercedes parts seller and my garage fitted them for me no problem, light hasn't come back on since, hope this helps 😊

This helps! It shows that replacing parts in the chain, or bad connections, make the airbag light stay off. Apparently no need to reprogram the airbag module.
Thanks, Jim.

Thanks, Jim.
I now know the module will keep giving the error and the airbag light will stay on. Apparently, it needs to be reset.
I interchanged the module between my 2 XFs and now both airbag light are on. I've had the codes read and they're both the same, naturally. After resetting, they come back on.
I'll go to the Chrysler dealer later this week.

Did you disconnect the battery before you took the sensors out?
Before touching the air bag system it seems you have to disconnect the battery.

Yes I did. And for more than an hour before touching any electrical.
I am going to read the forum thoroughly, later, to see whether there's some additional info I haven't seen, yet.

Back from the Chrysler dealer and 50+ euro lighter without any progress whatsoever.

Although I had an appointment, I had to wait for an hour for them to get the computer from another location. After 10 minutes of work they gave me the same message I already knew and had e-mailed them. Fault codes read belt tensioners andwill return after reset. This in the car for which we know there is no fault whatsoever.

Since I've heard this say from separate sources, I am now going to change the airbag modules back to their respective original car. It could be they're 'married to that specific car. See what happens then.

BTW, the mecanic tipped me I could shorten the circuit with a 2 Ohm resistance (or alike) to stop the light from coming on and keep the airbags working.

BTW II, that Chrysler stealership is Kien in Arnhem
