Default SRT6 Brake Upgrade (FINALLY)

Stay tuned to this post. I'm finally installing the SRT6 front braking system on the Limited after some snafu's by DC parts department. I will post a full parts list w/ costs and a photo "How To"... later this evening... This upgrade costs 35% less than the Brembo Big Brake Kit and offers the same swept area, rotor size and similar dual piston caliper for the Limited...

Also, I got a call from Chrysler and they are apologizing for the parts problem and plan on rectifying it soon with the correct part #'s... Thanks to Lenny at http: www.chryslerpartsdirect.com and our new member CHIPSHOTZ...

KUDOS TO BOTH OF YOU !!!

Ok, here we go: I may have to do this "HOW TO" in segments... If you have some mechanical experience you will understand it completely. The calipers and caliper mounting brackets come in left side / right side. If you plan on doing this process before March of 2006, you will have to order the caliper mounting brackets (brake anchors) from a Mercedes Benz dealer because Chrysler is still trying to figure out the correct part #'s.

This is for the front only, I am still working on the rears and believe that in order to maintain the correct brake bias you will need to upgrade the rear brakes as well...

First:
Here are the parts needed from http://www.chryslerpartsdirect.com
1) 5143224AA Caliper $334.29
1) 5143225AA Caliper $334.29
2) 5135475AA Rotors $129.76
1) 5143230AA Pad Kit $56.42

Optional
2) Pad Wear Sensors $4.60

Second:
Here are the parts from Mercedes Benz
1) 0004202515 Brake Anchor $213.00
1) 0004202415 Brake Anchor $213.00

These prices do not reflect shipping charges to California.

The entire swap-out only took 1.5 hours per side and was slowed down by me taking pictures and drinking beer...

First thing you notice when you get the parts in, is that the rotors are painted with rust preventative grey paint... I took a small grit grinding stone to (VERY LIGHTLY) burnish the rotor and remove the paint.

I would also recommend you follow the proceedures from the maintenance manual of installing new brakes. Use the proper caliper grease and torque specs. And have at least 2 qts. of brake fluid on hand when you bleed the system.

Here we go, these should be in order...

Never mind, This website software leaves alot to be desired... Now I can't finish the photo "HOW TO" upload because the site won't allow any more photos attached to this post... There are 10 more pictures showing the install...

For those of you who know what you're doing... You don't need the "HOW TO", here are the final install pictures... What's up with this website Andrew ?... Darn !!!

Awesome job, HDDP! Let us know what its like driving with them. Did you happen to notice if the STR-6 rears are the same as the Limited? I'm kind of curious how they handled brake bias with the extra piston up front.

The rotor sizes are different in the spec. and I sure know that the rear caliper adapter is different, Here are the specs so you can compare both... I'm going to see if the front caliper from the Limited will swap-out to the rear with the larger rotor... I have one sitting in my garage that DC swore was for the front of the SRT6... LOL then they called me today and said OOPS !, it's the rear...

I have to do my week long rotor seasoning and pad bedding process, so I won't know if the bias is off until next week when I get a chance to really test them hard on the track... I'm guessing my rear-end is going to chase the front end on hard braking turns unless I upgrade the a$$ end as well...

PS: This was a piece of cake once I got the correct caliper adapter from MB...

if you plan on slotting or Xdrilling you must do before testing!!!

I can't believe you didn't paint the calipers... :-)

Do you have to do that before you break them in 2?

Sorry...

Actually it should be just the opposite! And in your case you might actually prefer it this way rather than go with the SRT-6 rears. This set-up will give you substantially more front bias than stock, which means that you should be able to brake later and harder going into a corner than you were able to before. The relatively puny rear brakes will not be able to clamp as hard relative to the fronts and will be less likely to make the back end misbehave as you pass through the apex. In the motorcycle world, they refer to the technique as trail braking and it serves to keep the suspension loaded properly so that the transition from braking to throttle is less "dramatic".

I would suggest doing a track event the way you are now and see how you like it.

HDDP. Would you like to type their orders on the photos before posting to your gallery? Then we can see orders of photos more easily.

If you're serious about slotting them? Yes you must do before testing otherwise metal will temper with heat and be impossible to slot or XDrill! This info was given to me by the Brakeworld guys that Xdrill brembo blanks for nascar!

Dan, you must have misunderstood my other post... Yes, I am aware that any cross drilling or slotting needs to be done on a pristine rotor... And by the way, I've been doing this stuff for over 25 years now... Thank you for your concern incase I overlooked something...

Bobs: You are completely correct... What the heck was I thinking ? It must be from my old heel / toe days when we had too much braking force on the front brakes going into a turn while simultaneously accelerating. It had a tendency to break the rear end loose... But that was a different kind of beast, mega HP V8's with no posi traction etc. I keep forgetting we've only got a little 215 hp turtle with a pseudo limited slip differential that feathers the brakes in the rear...

I'll try the new brakes on the track in the next few weeks and keep you posted...

Thank you for doing job.

By the way. May I know the parts number of 'Pad Wear Sensors'? There is not the parts number in your first post. ;-)

Optional
2) Pad Wear Sensors $4.60
