It attaches to the vertical carpeted section of the tunnel area with two sets of long metal pins. When mounted correctly, it is very stable, and its extra depth holds cans and bottles and cups securely. I put it on the passenger side close to the seat (so it doesn't interfere with the passenger's feet) and can reach it easily and without the elbow gyrations required to use the stock cupholder. And if anything ever spills (nothing has yet), the liquid would go on the floor mat and not on the console or the seats. It's a good solution, given the physical parameters we have to work with in the cabin.
