I have 163k and the same noise. The Mercedes shop I go to said it's normal for these engines to be noisy as they age....but I still don't buy it. I'm going to mention that next time I go in for service to see if that is something they've heard of on this engine.

Were you able to get any confirmation on the suspected cause?
