HELP: Aftermarket Head Unit won't stay in the dash...
 

Ok, to make a long story short. Last night I was installing my headunit in the SRT-6. I wired everything up as described in the how-to and that went fine. The radio works perfect and looks great with the dash. The problem is with the "sleeve" that you slide the headunit into. The sleeve obviously has little tabs that are supposed to be used to secure the sleeve in the dash opening... Well this particular one has NO TABS that line up with any of the of the Dash opening. The opening is COMPLETELY smooth except for where the factory radio locks to it. In the How-To it's mentioned that there is a place at the top of the opening that can be used for these tabs, but no dice here. So basically, the Headunit is just kinda sitting there and wont stay in the dash. Not to mention you can pull it right out with no effort. I took it a stereo shop near where I work, and they couldn't help either. I would try a different sleeve, but it has to be one specific to this headunit because of the way it locks into it...

Has anyone else had this problem?

There's another way to do it. The rear of your head unit should have a set screw where you can screw it down to something. You would have to take apart the sides of the console and get a strip of metal and loop it and screw it down to the head unit. It's much harder to do.

BTW, what head unit did you get? I've seen Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer and Alpine all have sleeves that have the mounting tabs.

Also the other alternative is get a dremmel tool and make your own tabs on that sleeve.

I know I can do that, but i was really hoping to avoid it. It still wouldn't 100% solve the problem either. That strap will surely keep it from disappearing. I don't think it will help keep the Unit sitting right in the dash.

I was thinking of either using some Epoxy or some industrial strength 3M tape. I figure if I can put the tape on the top and bottom of the sleeve, when I slide the unit in, it will stay in place. I'm going to try that first, and hopefully that will work... I'll let you know.

I went with a Clarion DXZ955MC. Its a discontinued unit, but I was able to find a new on a clearance website. Its a HIGH END unit. Has everything from Dolby Digital Surround, to a built in CD Recorder. And it matches the interior pretty well. I was going to go with the Pioneer Premier DEH-880PRS like you have, but I've always been a Clarion guy and had great luck with them...

That head unit is pretty nice. I like it. The only problem with epoxy or double sided industrial tape is that it still makes it easy to steal if the sleeve can't be mounted down properly. When you get your head unit installed, I'd like to see some pics.

The only thing I don't like about it is how far it sticks out of the dash (even when positioned properly) The face plate is about an inch thick and thus sticks out a bit more than I would like, but there was no way of knowing that before ordering it. If I HAD known that, I would have probably gone with the Premier that you have.

I'm not too concerned about theft, as I live in a LOW crime area. The car stays garaged at night and just outside my window at work. I ALWAYS take the Face Plate inside with me as well.
