OEM NAV installation problem,...help please!
I'm in the middle of switching to an OEM Nav unit and need advise, please. I was not so lucky as to have my car pre-wired so I have to install the jumper wires. No problem with the speed signal wire but I'm having difficulty identifying the back-up signal wire. Following the instructions I've located the cluster of wires and need to splice into the GY/YL wire. To me this means I need to find the grey wire with a yellow stripe. (The reason I think it's a grey wire with a yellow stripe is because the speed signal wire is green with a white stripe and the instructions label it as GN/WT.) I find there are 4 grey wires in the cluster, one has a red stripe, one has a black stripe, one has a green stripe and one appears to be solid grey. Uhm, so I think maybe the instructions are wrong so I go to the Manual and sure enough the back-up signal wire is GY/YL, so this makes me think the instructions are correct, but I'm no closer to solving my problem. So has anybody else run into this problem or could it be just my poor eyesight? Is there any way to test the wires to identify the back-up signal wire? Thanks...........

Thanks SNAKEWOLF. I'm working from the installation instructions that shows the back up signal wire is in a cluster of wires coming out of the floor board, I just haven't been able to find a GY/YL wire in that cluster. Hoping someone has done this installation and can tell me which wire it is, I suspect it may be colour coded differently. Also, I found a post tfrom forum member alfdoc that says the Nav unit works OK without the back-up wire connected. Can anyone confirm this?

I had the same problem as you in trying to find the back-up signal in the wire cluster in the floor board. I contacted Becker support and they told me that the back-up wire is not necessary for the nav to work but the speed signal is but I would still like to hook it up one day so please post about any success you have in this.
Thanks Pat! I'll keep looking and post whatever I find out! I'm certainly not blazing a new trail here.......someone knows. Just have to get their attention.

Thats the problem there isn't any GR/YL wire in that cluster of wires. I looked when I installed mine and Bluecoupe couldn't find the GR/YL as well.
It wouldn't surprise me if the instructions are wrong because when I first bought my nav radio the instructions that came with the radio were backwards with the wheel speed wire and the back up wire were reversed. I was able to figure it out with the help of a Chrysler tech and Becker of North America. This was before any of the service manuals were available on this forum.
To all that replied, thanks for your help. I'm just wondering if the back-up signal wire colour coding changed from 2004 to 2005? The manual I'm working from is 2004. I thought I'd check out the SRT manual to compare however it appears the download site isn't responding. If anyone has a more recent version of the manual to confirm the back-up wire colour coding, that would be helpful.
All I know is I followed those instructions for my 2004 and the wiring is most definitely there as documented. I can't say for sure but generally, on something like this, it's rare (though not unheard of) for the harness to change from year to year on a car like this that is fundamentally the same through the entire run.
Note also that the drawing is dated Nov 3 2005 which tells me that cars made around that time would probably be wired that way. Which suggests this drawing may apply to cars as late as model year 2006.
I will tell you that I had to unwrap the tape bundle to be able to see all the wires. Additionally, what helped me to confirm on the radio plug for the Speed signal, was the pin location for the wire. Take a hard look at that wire with a bright light and glasses (if you need them for reading).

Thanks for the confirmation ppro! I agree, the speed signal wire is no problem to identify. The wire is clearly green with a thin white stripe and can be confirmed by the pin location on the plug. As for the back-up signal, I have unwrapped the bundle, separated out all of the grey wires and will re-examine them with my reading glasses, trouble light and this time a magnifying glass also. Hopefully I'll find a very thin yellow line on the backside of what I have identified as the solid grey wire.

Thanks again ppro. Tonight I got out the trouble light and a magnifying glass and had another look. The wire I thought was solid grey, was not. It is gray with a mauve stripe. So the 4 gray wires are gray with mauve stripe, gray with black stripe, gray with red stripe and gray with green stripe. So for the back-up signal, the instructions for my car do not apply. I did find the gray with yellow stripe wire coming from my passenger side back-up light socket just as ppro had suggested. I'm going to follow it as far as I can towards the front of the car and splice into it. Hopefully, I won't have to remove too much of the interior trim.

On using the rear wire, I'd just run the wire from right there - one wire is easy to conceal - just sneak it up between the side trim and bottom in the crease by the rear wheel arch (after fishing it out from under the side panel where the lights are and under the cover for the tire repair kits.
then along the door jamb under the rubber part that runs along the bottom of the door, then under the kick panel and through the floor area where the amp is located. The NAV unit is just looking for a signal - doesn't need power - just some volts on the wire.
Run the lead to the back and hook it up before you hide it just in case you have to mess with it.
Solved!!! and it was right under my nose literally. The elusive GY/YL wire is not where it is shown on the diagram. It is located in the other "thicker" bundle of wires on the right side of the passenger footwell. Actually, it is easier to access than the smaller bundle of wires I had been looking at.

No, I haven't tested it or hooked it up yet. I've got the battery disconnected and my hands are going numb in the garage, still below freezing here. It was SNAKEWOLF's post that lead me to look at the "other" bundle of wires. On his advise I went back to the Manual and looked at 8W - 91 - 2 8W-91 CONNECTOR/GROUND/SPLICE LOCATION (Behind the Passenger Footwell) for pin connector (C201) for the back-up signal sensor and elusive GY/YL wire. It tells me to go to Fig. 2. Well Fig. 2 shows me the left side engine compartment which I figure is another red herring but right below it is Fig. 3 which shows me the right side floor and a big old arrow pointing to C201. So this tells me there's gotta be a GY/YL wire in the passenger footwell going to C201. I know where it's not so I unwrap the "other" bundle of wires and eureka! GY/YL wire. I figure if I pull up the carpet I'll see the GY/YL wire going right to C201. Ill confirm on the weekend but if you get there before me, let me know.
Just turn the car on, put it in reverse, put your other foot in a bucket of salt water and bite the wire in question. If you get a shock, that's the wire.
I had an opportunity to put the volt meter on the GY/YL wire today as suggested. Hooked up the battery, ran a ground wire from the battery terminal to the volt meter ground and bared the GY/YL for a good contact with the positive volt meter lead. With the key in the off position, no voltage. Now with the key in the run position to light up the reverse lights, I checked the GY/YL wire and voila 11.88 volts. So with the key in the run position I now put the car in neutral and check the GY/YL wire and still 11.88 volts. Tried all the other shifter positions and still 11.88 volts. So not what I was expecting. What this suggests to me is that if I connected the back-up signal lead to this wire I'd have voltage going to the nav radio whenever the key is in the run position. Is this what I want? Have I performed the test correctly?
