I would like to know how long I can stay in the states as a 'visitor' without either the IRS considering me a permanent for tax purposes or maybe blocking me out of the country altogether.

As for your question... I have been looking but found nothing "official". Alot of crap about 90 days or 6 months but that required a "visitors visa" or some other type of "visa". I will make a phone call or two tomorrow to get the Correct answer and will post it in the 1st post and hopfully provide a link to your question for future reference.

edit: Made 3 calls, spent 2 hours on the phone, got transfered to many different departments. no result yet.

Results... I dont know Roy. How about you stay there for a year and I will call the IRS and whoever I can find and we will see what happens!

What are your personal exemptions?

After each absence of 24 hours or more

You can claim up to CAN$200 worth of goods without paying any duties. This is your personal exemption. You must have the goods with you when you arrive in Canada and you cannot include tobacco products or alcoholic beverages in this exemption. If the goods you bring in are worth more than CAN$200 in total, you cannot claim this exemption. Instead, you have to pay full duties on all goods you bring in.
