It isn't just Jiffy Lube. As a consumer affairs representative, I've handled hundreds of similar cases. I work for the Bureau of Automotive Repair here in Ca. Other states also have similar Consumer Affairs programs. Find out if your state has such a program now, before you need them and keep the number handy.
To protect yourselves and our xfires do these simple things when you get repairs done.
1) Always get the old parts back. When authorizing repairs, specifically tell the service writer you want the old parts back. Bring plastic bags with you when you turn the car in for repair. The bags protect the interior and most shops don't have any.
2) Whenever possible watch the repairs being done.
3) For people in CA contact me or go to your local Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) office and get some BAR key rings. Put your key on that key ring and be sure to give it to the repair facility. It visibly lets the facility know that you are aware of your rights and know who to go to when there is a problem (there is an 800 phone number to BAR Mediation on it). All repair facilities have to be registered with us to perform repairs for compensation in the state, so they know who we are and what we do.
4) Always check the work when you get the car back. If you have any questions or problems, call the facility. If they give you any grief call BAR immediately.
Of course this works on other cars than crossfires, but lets take care of our babies first!!

This is why I never let a mechanic work on my car without observing the procedures cause I am sure this happens all the time... every business has it's scams and a lot of people have no experience with cars at all...
I have seen mechanics tell them that perfectly fine parts need to be replaced than overcharge...

Good story thanks for sharing.
I work on car for a living and know many people in the industry and I can honestly say I don't know anyone one who would try to pull this kind of SH*T!
There are honest people out there and word of mouth is usually the best way to find them.
If you are in doubt ask questions, if there is nothing to hide it won't be a problem.

What I can't understand is the number of low-life people out there that will steal from you or find some kind of angle to screw you out of money. It seems to get worse everyday and I just don't know why! When you think you have heard it all listen to this!
