Default What a terrible way to start 2007

Well Guys, my new year started off yesterday with me coming home from work to find out that our house had been broken into. The thief's broke through the front door and cleaned out my parents room. They made off with about $15,000 in jewelry and also the spare key to my crossfire. Anyone know if I can get the car reprogrammed with a new key or do I have to replace the entire ignition? Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear that buddy...go to the (any) dealership PRONTO- like TODAY - and tell them what you need, they'll be able to get you moving in the replacement/recoding of the key. Until you get a new and reprogrammed key, park your car in some place where access is difficult for the "thieves" to return and take it easily. Not likely to return, but then again they didn't take your keys as a trophy either.

I'm not sure if you need to replace the whole ignition, I believe you can order a new key with a different RF signal output, and all you need to do is reprogram the cars receiver. It's not that hard to do.
Sure doesn't make one feel very comfortable, why would someone steal your key? Kinda makes me think they might be watching you and might hit you up again. If I where you I would install a switch on the fuel pump so only you know how to turn on the car.

Blacklimitedcoupe, I'm really sorry to hear about your break-in. The same thing happened to us 20 years ago this summer. Cleaned us out pretty good, but didn't get any of our car keys.
They returned about a month later (figured we had replaced everything they stole) but didn't realize we were at home. Took off as soon as I turned the outside light on.
I got their license # and called the SHERIFFS DEPT. but they said they were probably just turning around in my driveway. Our drive way goes up a steep hill and circles around behind our house and is 224' long. I told the dispatcher nobody pulls up to our garage at 10:00 PM at night just to turn around. So they sent out a car and took a report but that's as far as it got.
I did some investigating myself, and found out they lived near a friend of mine, and when I asked him how well he knew them, he said everybody in his neighborhood thought they were responsible for a string of break-ins that had been going on for some time where he lived. But of course nothing was ever proven.
Before the break-in we were getting a rash of hang up calls, so we started screening all our calls after that.
Needless to say, but change your locks, and maybe consider a security system. At the very least, put up some "phony" security signs.
Good Luck.

BLC, sorry to here about your new year start. It's a shame, but I think you're getting good advice here in terms of getting your key re-programmed, and changing your locks. I haven't had this experience in a long long time, but I get that occasional teen age prank. I've thought about putting a remote camera pointing outside. Something to consider.

Good luck.

FP

+fireamx, interesting story. That is just plain laziness on the police's part.

Actually, thieves are VERY VERY likely to return. They usually give a week or so for items to be replaced.. electronics and what not.

Also, door locks should ALWAYS and seldom are secured through the frame of the house. ALL and I mean ALL key locks are almost worthless now. Most 14 year olds can get around a house key lock now. Do a Google search (or UTUBE) for "key bumping". Electronic keypads (not paying for monthly security fees) are the best security locks now.
