Feeling a little awkward...
Getting in and (mostly) out of my new Crossfire. I've been right leg in, collapse until my butt hits, swing left leg in and swivel butt straight.
Out however, is even less graceful-left leg out, kick the door speaker, left hand either on the seatback where it narrows to headrest, or on door striker, heave, and go. It's just so different from what I'm used to - 1993 GMC 2500 w/8" lift and 35's. Love the car though...been a looong time since I've had to watch where I park in relation to others, slow down for bumps/potholes, receive admiring glances as I go by, etc. |
Re: Feeling a little awkward...
Welcome to the club! I always feel a little acrobatic when getting in and out as well but once I'm situated, it fits like a glove. The big trick is to not kick the speaker grille too hard because it will crack. Don't ask me how I know this...

Re: Feeling a little awkward...
An owner of a Triumph TR3 once told me that owners of that car always have scarred left knuckles from having to roll out from behind the wheel while pushing the left fist on the ground to execute the dismount. For you kids, here's a picture of a TR3.
I still want one. http://www.performance-vision.com/family/tr3-4.JPG |
Re: Feeling a little awkward...
I cracked my speaker within 2 weeks of owning my car. Only broke the links between 3 or 4 holes, and I pushed it back together, but i didn't even think of it when it happened. But once i realized i am more careful. It’s a lot easier if you can open the door all the way and come from the side instead of from behind on an angle.

You guys are making it too complicated, the exit maneuver is rather simple. open door all the way or as far as possible, put right hand on steering wheel, then rotate your fat as*es 90* on the seat, while simultaneously lifting both feet upwards. You swing your two feet 90* out of the door and plop them on the ground. then you push off or pull on the chrome door handle, tah dah... your out.

Re: Feeling a little awkward...
I met a really and I mean REALLY BIG guy when I went to get a pass for my new Crossfire. He worked the desk and when I showed my temporary registration he told me he almost bought a Crossfire two years ago.
He told me he went to the Chrysler dealer with checkbook in hand ready to buy one, but when they went for a test drive he could not fit into the car. At first there was a uncomfortable silence, then we both started busting out laughing at the same time. He took it pretty well but I could tell he really wanted one to drive. |
Re: Feeling a little awkward...
This is one of the VERY, VERY few times that being all of 5'4" as a man has come in handy. I have no issues getting in or out of my car and actually find it quite roomy. Even more so than my previous car - a Ford Escort.
My sympathies are somewhat with you. I know what it's like to not fit into things and it really sucks. |

Though, I do have a problem that you all won't have to face. And when you have to cramp in between two vehicles, that will be a slight problem. Still, I have to agree with Maxwell except I mirrored the tactic since am a right hand driver. :) |

Second, it IS the problem that you won't have to face. Which bring to third, I don't have to share "mini skirt technique". :) |

Alas I will have no advice for my girlfriend...I guess I will have to be a gentleman, open her door and give her my hand. BTW what are you doing up so late? I have an 8-9 pm conf call with s'pore so that I catch them in the morning - is it not 13 hours time difference. - ej On the contrary, you seems to handle the matter pretty well. Your girlfriend is a lucky person and am sure she thinks highly of you. Where you at perhaps yeah we are about that much of time difference. When am up this late means am with my l/top with 4 opened browsers (Tabs) - Office email, two Data entry portals (office work brought home), crossfireforum.org ;) Something like multi-tasking. Ohh and msnmessenger. :p |

Re: Feeling a little awkward...
I think part of the problem is that in a lot of parking spaces you can't open the door wide enough to get in the car comfortably. I look at it this way, I'm old but I have a really nice car, so what if I look silly trying to get into it.

Well I am 6 ft 3... now I am in... I am staying in !!!
Reminds me of a test drive in a lotus elise... I got in ok... but could NOT get out - the roof had to be taken off so I could stand up... What ever 'cred' I had, I lost very quickly getting out ! |

Hook left elbow behind seat back side bolster and push with elbow. 5) Twist hips and thrust up with left leg (kinda of a one leg squat) It's like a golf swing...practice makes perfect. - ej |
Re: Feeling a little awkward...
 Forget being graceful here. Just fold yourself in half and flop down in the drivers seat. For you gentlemen, if you take any Viagra before you get in, you won't get in. If you take Viagra before you get out, it may be 4 hours before you will be able to get out, and in that case you will need to seek emergency medical help for some odd medical thing. LOL.
