one of the worst days of my life
the dealer here only has one guy that knows anything about the car, and all he said is that it shattered. i wasn't the first owner of the car, so the dude before me could have treated it like ****. (from what i've seen, he did. the interior is badly worn for a 4 year old car.) i just want to know what would cause the clutch to shatter to prevent future problems. i'll admit i'm not a mechanic. i know a little about the engines and exhausts but not much about the crossfire transmissions.
I just recently had a clutch go out almost over night on me ('02 mini cooper, 67k miles)... was driving down a hill, came to a stop sign, all was fine, came to the next and the car wouldn't move. So it can happen.
That said, while dealing with the process of figuring out who was going to pay for it(this occurred 3 days after purchasing the car), I was speaking to a mini service advisor, and was told that a worn down clutch can happen at low mileage. If the clutch grenades itself, and shatters all over the place, however, it is usually a sign of a defective part, and that it should be covered under a warranty, as this is not the result of wear.
Now I don't know how this would apply to the different stages of the warranty, as this wasn't the case with our car, so there was no need to look into it further. But it's something worth keeping in mind. An exploding clutch is not normal wear and tear.
