I must be a Goober, I can't reset the FSS service

I have followed the followng instructions over and over and when I am done I still get -720. What the heck am I doing wrong?

RESETTING THE FSS MAINTENANCE INDICATOR AFTER AN OIL CHANGE

1. Move the ignition switch to the “RUN” position.
2. Within 4 seconds of moving the ignition switch into the
“RUN” position, press the reset button for the trip odometer
twice within one second. The display for the FSS service
request is activated for 10 seconds
3. During the 10 seconds the FSS service request is displayed,
move the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.
The FSS service request will continue to be displayed.
4. Press the reset button for the trip odometer and
hold.
5. Move the ignition switch to the “RUN” position
6. Continue to press and hold the reset button for the trip
odometer (about 10 seconds) until the audible signal
sounds and the new start distance appears in the display.
The tool symbol should disappear at this time.

It's tricky. So go try again.

It always takes me 3 or 4 tries to get it.

Hell, it took me about 20 times before it worked and I swear I wasn't doing anything different each time. Just keep trying. It'll work eventually.

You have my sympathies.

I posted on this a while ago.

I had to do this recently.

After wearing a hole in my thumb from mashing the darn button about two dozen times, I finally got it.

IIRC, the "trick" is in the second step. Forget the "4 seconds...within one second" stuff. What they mean is: "almost instantaneously press the knob/button twice." When you get the status displayed, you're golden. The rest is cake.

I agree completely, I was starting to think I was a complete idiot and then suddenly it worked. Think I read the manual about three times, then when my wife asked why it took me so long to do a ten minute oil change I felt stupid all over again. And then I went for a drive and everything was right with the world again...
