I've decided to buy a Crossfire and need some help - please.
 

Dear Crossfire Coupers,
I just decided last night after long lusting for a Crossfire, that I am going to start looking for one to purchase. I just love the car. I have a couple of questions and hope that one of you generous souls will take the time to answer my goofy inquiries. I appreciate the guidance and help.
1. I want to go with the first year the auto was produced - I believe that is 2004?
2. I want a six speed; however, is that a mistake over the automatic?
3. I just want to buy one that is in good shape of course - what are the pitfalls and weaknesses of the first year models?
4. Is it a performance auto? This sounds stupid; however, I have a very fast dynoed Porsche 928 and a dynoed mazda RX7. I plan on selling these cars in order to afford the Crossfire and want to ensure that I won't be disappointed in terms of the handling and response. I don't expect a rocket, just nice power for the highway.
5. Are they problematic in terms of upkeep?
6. What are the typical mods to increase the horsepower?
7. How much can I expect to pay for a 2004 with average mileage?
8. What is the liklihood of the 2004 becoming a "Classic?"
9. What options should I look for?
10. What is the average gas mileage in the city and highway?

Welcome to the Forum CB ! I will attempt to answer your questions as best I can.

1) first year 2004
2) Hmmm, you'll get alot of arguement over this one a) cruising go auto b) performance go 6 speed
3) Rust under the doors, hard shifting on six speed, anything five years old has pitfalls
4) Nope - you'll be sorely disappointed in comparision to the Porche
5) It's mechanical...stuff breaks. oil changes will cost ya a " C " note. Tires ? forget about it. It's an expensive car to own
6) ECU tune, sprint booster, cold air intakes
7) Depends, but a good guess anywhere from 10 to 17K
8) Highly unlikely
9) 04's are loaded, there are no options except choice of color
10) 22-25 city 27 to 30 hiway

I am surprised though that the Crossfire will not become a "classic." It is so unique. It will be interesting 30 years from now. I am pleased about the gas mileage, my Porsche get about 10 miles per gallon in the city.

Mine's an '07 6 speed.....getting 26 mpg...daily driver...if you keep the rpms up ...it shifts great....the clunkiness you may have read about occurs sometimes if you don't have the rpms up ....done correctly it's smooth as butter!!

If you buy a new one you can get at least 10-14 $K off sticker & a lifetime powertrain warranty (I did!)

Considering that many have modified theirs, crashed theirs, etc......the few remaining "box stock" examples will probably retain some value in 20-30 years.

If you sit one next to a SLK 320 or even the new SLK 350.....you quickly realize it's the same car....-$20-40K.
