Resetting The FSS --- I just can't get it done. Please help.

If anyone can help or offer advice, please let me know. I tried this a million times and I can not get it to work. I don't hear a tone or anything. I keep seeing negative numbers. By run position, is it all the way over without starting the engine?

RESETTING THE FSS MAINTENANCE INDICATOR AFTER AN OIL CHANGE

1. Move the ignition switch to the “RUN” position.
2. Within 4 seconds of moving the ignition switch into the
“RUN” position, press the reset button for the trip odometer
twice within one second. The display for the FSS service
request is activated for 10 seconds
3. During the 10 seconds the FSS service request is displayed,
move the ignition switch to the “OFF” position.
The FSS service request will continue to be displayed.
4. Press the reset button for the trip odometer and
hold.
5. Move the ignition switch to the “RUN” position
6. Continue to press and hold the reset button for the trip
odometer (about 10 seconds) until the audible signal
sounds and the new start distance appears in the display.
The tool symbol should disappear at this time.

It took me 4 times to finally get it. Keep trying.

I finally got... I heard the tone and now it says 7,000 miles.

How does this thing work? I put 15 miles on the car this morning and it still says 7,000 miles. Does the mileage count down to the nearest hundred? Or does it just tell you when the oil change is due?

Thanks!

It drops in increments of 100 miles.

The mileage to the next oil change can also go up. I generally get 9,000 miles or so before a change is indicated.....it all depends on your style of driving. Usually, longer and higher speed driving increases the mileage to your next change.

There are a lot of factors and opinions as to when the oil change is needed. It is one of those things that nobody has a definite answer on. Everything thinks their way is the correct way. Some say it is good to change frequently... others say too frequently is not good either. I just did mine with 5K miles. I figure that is a pretty safe number.

This is true but you may drive 500 miles and only drop by 300 on the FSS.
It is not reading actual miles and deducting them.
It is all based on your driving conditions such as speed, temperature etc.

Can we trust it to tell us when to change the oil? I wish it gave me straight miles.
