How to soften water...

I have really hard water and I am looking for a way to rinse the car so I don't get water spots. Is there something I can add to the water to soften it down? I see they sell reverse osmosis filters for garden hoses and I am sure that is the best way. I usually take it to the car wash and spray it with the spot free rinse.

Not sure how to answer your question.

But I rinse at the self service car wash with the 'wax' option. Then when I get home about 5 minutes later, I go around it with Turtle Wax Express Shine.

I use the spot free rinse at the do it yourself wash. Works great especially on black cars. Just wondering if there was a home remedy secret... like maybe put a couple drops of vinegar in the bucket or something. Maybe something that is safe on the car. Eventually I will get a filter for the hose.

Here is the best solution to your problem. I used this stuff for years and worked great. The more water on the car, the better it dried with a towel. Suddenly I can't find it anymore. I can't find it on their website anymore either. Definitely took care of any spots you missed and absolutely no water spots.

Yes... I am serious. You may not understand what I am dealing with here. We have some serious hard water issues. I wash my car and dry it with a towel but there are still water marks.

Have you read this thread?

Written by some of the best here.

Go to step #17 & 18. If your car is clean and waxed, running the rinse water at high flow/low pressure will just "sheet" the existing water off. No Spot!

It works, believe it or not.

I use a leaf blower then wipe with a good microfiber towel. I can dry the whole car in 5 minutes or less.:D Well, maybe 6 minutes. The water doesn't have time to leave spots.

You could put a water softener in your house, figure $500, to $1000.

This will help alot, as long as you get your water from a line that is softened.

The Mr, Clean posted also works great, keep an eye on the filter. also much cheaper than a whole house softener.

I do not know how serious or obsessive you are about this issue BUT If you go to griotsgarage.com you can buy a portable water deionizer for your hose. They work super.

Don't know how handy you are or if you own a house but if you do consider installing a water softener and run one of the hose bids through it and that is where you can wash the cars. You will be amazed at how the shower feels if you have a water softner. I plumbed the garage for hot and cold water to rise the snow and salt off the cars in the winter.

Other suggestions may be cheaper. Just some thoughts or for future reference if someone is looking at a new build or major remodel to a man cave garage.

Blackcrossfire07,
Some people can only relate to what they have experienced in their own lifetime, unfortunately.

Anyone who has seen rusty toilet bowls or calcium-encrusted irons, however, can probably be sympathetic to your issue with water spots. Another solution is to add a water softening system to your home's water supply. Outside of getting used to slimy feeling showers you will have lowered shampoo and laundry soap costs over time...hehe

Good luck,
Chris

It is actual well water straight from the ground. After this post I am now seriously starting to think about adding a water filter to the whole place and not just the drinking water. Thanks for your help.

The Culligan Man took care of all my hard water problems.....whole house plus outside faucets. I can by-pass the outside faucets if need be for watering flower beds, etc. But you are talking $1200, though definitely worth it in hard water areas.
