Default Hoping to get some help with recently bought Crossfire

First off as a new member I would like to say hello to everyone!

Last week I bought a 2004 Chrysler crossfire, 6 speed with 55000 miles. Up until today everything was fine, no issues. Just as I turned onto my street today the car lost all power and died. The radio and all the other electronics were still on. When i tried to start it, it would turn over but not start. I tried this about 5 times with no change. After about 5 minutes it started up right away. I took the car for a quick spin and noticed the check engine light was on, so i pulled over and turned off the car. After about another 5 minutes i started it again and the check engine light was now gone.

What is going on?!

And of course what is a thread without pictures!

Beautiful car!
as you will hear from more than just me it would be time to suspect the battery. Our cars seem to get strange with anything other than a "perfect" on board source of 12v power. Is your battery oem? Time for new. Just my 2 cents,
Rob

I agree with GT6. Sounds like the dreaded crank position sensor.

I think it's an issue with your flux capacitor.

GT6 is generally right about these things.

cps local auto store should be able to get you one, a "how to" link is on here. Just use the search feature to find the how too, or take it to your local garage with the info in hand....good luck....Oh, and the part should be under $50.00...now, good luck...the search feature will give all the info in world...you need to know to keep going....whether it's the RCM...relay control module, which can be soldered if you are mechanical enough to do yourself, or the CPS, crankshaft position sensor, which is underneath in a tough spot, with a tricky screw to get out...still a do it yourself job...if you look for the "how to's on here..now, good luck again....

As the others have said, my money is on the crankshaft position sensor. Had an 97 firebird that used to do the same exact thing. Putting on the new sensor fixed the issues.

After work today I removed the RCM and inspected the solder joints. I found one that looked suspicious so I re-soldered it. I took the car for a spin and so far it seems good.

The battery in the car is still the original OEM so that will the next thing I will replace.

If the issue continues on i will end up replacing the crankshaft position sensor.

Thank you all for the quick responses and help!

Smart move! Repair the least costly thing first and then move on to the regular maintenance with the battery replacement.

I was having the same problem, intermittently of course, and first thing I did was replace the crankshaft position sensor. Problem started happening again and soldered the RCM. Haven't had him die on me in traffic since.

Enjoy your fun new ride!!!

Thanks for all the compliments!

So I just have a few more questions for you all.

1. The air filters need to be replaced, Are K&N's worth the extra money?

2. Oil needs to be changed. Should i use the suggested Mobil 0w-40 or is there something equivalent and cheaper? Also what brand of oil filter should i use?

3. I will be driving the car in the winter, which winter tires fit/suit the car the best? ( and won't break the bank)

thanks!

1. Yes, if you keep up with cleaning and oiling them. Also look into changing the in cabin air filter under the dash. I am betting it has never been done.

2. Use Mobil 0w-40 or 5w-40. It is the best. Don't go cheap on oil. You can usually find specials at auto parts stores for around $5.00 a quart. Normally it is $6.99 a quart.
I would use the Bosch fleece filter. Do a search here and you will see all kinds of links and opinions on that.

3. No clue as I live in Texas and winter is a week long process.

I also will be driving all year long and am located in northern Missouri. Tirerack.com did a fairly in depth test over what would be the best all season performance tire. The video is probably on youtube some where. The Winner by a long shot was the continental extreme contact DWS. Continental ExtremeContact DWS You can decide for yourself whether or not the price justifiable. I will be outfitting my Xfire with these here come a couple of months and will try to post the results of the purchase. I imagine there are better winter tires available but I would prefer to lose the least bit of performance necessary for those nice warm summer months. All in all these seem like a great compromise on paper.

Driving in winter will require good rubber. Having driven mine all winter long, with somtimes 5+ inches on the ground, I can say the tires you want are bridgestone blizzaks. Last time I looked, they had them for an AMAZING sale price since they are releasing a new design for next winter. Look around, but I think tirerack had sets in stock. I would check them out now, best time to buy snow tires is when it is 100degrees outside

Good luck with the new ride, do not cheap out on the essentials: gas, tires, oil, brakes, fluids, filters, etc and your new car will treat you right

Edit: if you will be buying an all season 'performance' tire (this is an oxymoron) do not expect to get much out of it in the summer. If you plan on driving spiritedly or do any track time, you will want a set for winter and one for summer, but if you do not plan on doing any of this, maybe an all season would work for you....

Well it happened again. I noticed it happened in 2nd gear yesterday and same thing today.

I am leaning now towards that crankshaft position sensor?

Yup - relay usually causes a no start problem. Cutting out while running is usually the CPS.

But at least you eliminated one issue.

I picked up the crank shaft position sensor this afternoon. Cost me 126 and change. (damn canadian pricing). Took me about 20 minutes to replace. Car started up with no problem and so far everything seems good. Hopefully I fixed the issue.

Also ordered K&N air filters and K&N oil filter.

Thanks again for every ones help!
