2004 Production Total

How many 2004 Crossfires are supposed to be produced? I was just at the dealer yesterday and they have two new ones in. I was surprised at how high their build numbers are, one is 22,XXX, and the other is 21,XXX, both built in 1/04. They are both auto's with continentals.

jsisabella 03-30-2004 09:09 AM

WOW!

We have been under the assumption that there would be about 20K total worldwide for this model year. And with the reported low sales, I figured they would cut that. Maybe the market researchers have found out something we already know - this is a great car!

At least we know where all the parts for the supply chain have gone!!!

:-)

oldfritz 03-30-2004 10:16 AM

Initial production figures were listed at 20,000, but after the Crossfire launch it was said that as many as 40,000 could actually be produced for 2004 model year depending upon demand 8) . It's more difficult to get the actual number produced thus far since the car is not actually assembled in North America.

jsisabella 03-30-2004 11:02 AM

Maybe I am harping on this issue, but I am not able to come up with a reasonable answer to this problem.

If D/C has the capacity to build up to 40K cars, and they obviously have not stopped at the 20K number, then obviously parts are still being produced by the suppliers. And most of the engine and chassis parts are stock SLK, which is not a new production vehicle.

If that is the case, then why are all parts for this vehicle so hard to obtain?

Stranded_2004 03-30-2004 11:14 AM

You are NOT alone!

If you call that harping, then I need to take up some more music lessons, because I definitely have to join in on that band! :? Maybe I am harping on this issue, but I am not able to come up with a reasonable answer to this problem.

I tell you what, Stranded_2004, if it was my car I would be handling it a lot worse than you are!!! I would probably be in jail so chocking the crap out of someone! :!

Like you, I can't understand why they can't get a MASS Airflow sensor from MB. It's been on the SLK 320 for a few years. The MB dealer parts departments should have them in stock. That and O2 sensors are fairly commonly replaced parts, I would think.

oldfritz 03-30-2004 03:29 PM

First of all, I'm not a Chrysler employee, nor a dealership employee, but I have close ties to each...that being said, if you guys will post the part number that is holding your vehicle up (should be available from the dealership holding you hostage) I'll run it through the mill and see what I can find out from my "sources." :!:

jsisabella 03-30-2004 05:02 PM

My car is running great, and I believe WM's is as well. It is just people like Stranded, and poor bobby who pretty much had his car raped by his dealer while waiting for parts, and that other guy that has been waiting for body parts for over 5 months that has me worried that if I do need something, I will be down for way longer than normal.

I do appreciate your offer. I am sure Stranded will be contacting you!

From what I've read they only sold about 7,000 crossfire's! I wonder how their going to unload the 2004's before the 2005's come out in a couple months??I saw one dealer with 16 crossfires lined up in a row.I think they might delay release of the 2005's.I don't think the srt6 will be available till sept.

Sounds like THAT dealer has PLENTY of MAF's in stock :!:

Is it just me, or is releasing something in APRIL of 2004 and calling it a 2005 model seem like a dumb idea? I mean, come on, bad enough they put out cars in Aug/Sep and call them the next year's model, but April is ridiculous. I DEMAND a new federal law, if you call it a 2005 model, you CAN'T SELL IT until 2005 :!: :!: :!:

r.robertson 03-31-2004 11:03 AM

my model is 23794. COnfirming that there is more than 20k out there.

Stranded_2004 03-31-2004 12:54 PM

Parts in, car's fixed......... for the moment .....

wonder what the 'jinxed' gods have in store for me next ~!

jsisabella 03-31-2004 02:43 PM

the washington post had a nice article on the roadster on sunday, march 28. it should provide some free advertising for chysler in one of their key crossfire marketing areas. the article suggested that the demand for the vert over the coupe might lead to high dealer premiums on the roadster. but with so many coupes available will it also further depress the price of the coupe?

with respect to current inventories, i did a little internet search on the five baltimore area dealers closest to me. they have 27, 13, 10, 7, and 2 crossfires in stock for a total of 59 cars. each has the same number, or more, crossfires than when i visited them in february. at least one of the dealers has yet to sell any. i would bet that combined they've sold no more than a dozen. it will be interesting to see how quickly they move in the next few months.

27 crossfires at one dealer, talk about selection... they must have every color/tranny/tires/interior combination possible!

they have all the exterior colors but most have the dark slate grey interior. mix of autos and 6 spds and most if not all had the michelins.

what's funny about this dealership is that they would not allow me a test drive unless i filled out a purchase order first due to the "exclusivity" of the car. well, for $1700 less i took my business to a dealer that was not quite as exclusive. i can't be sure of exactly how many crossfires they've sold in the last 6 weeks, but it is either 0 or 1.

shane 04-16-2004 08:58 PM

OK, I'm confused. Someone please set me straight. I thought that I read in all the trade publications early on, i.e. a few months after initial release that only 11,500 or some number like that, were being produced for the 2004 which was released in 2003 and that of that only 9700 were being released in the U.S. with the bulk of the remainder in Europe. Are you all taking about 2004's released in 2004? and if so are they considered 2005's? since most manufacturers release thier next years model in mid to late prior calendar year.

Stranded_2004 04-17-2004 12:39 AM

My replacement's number is in the 24,xxx range

David Burns 04-17-2004 09:16 AM

I'd read 20,000 total, with 11,000 coming to USA. Either DC didn't build with sequential VIN #'s, or they've built more than was planned???

Stranded_2004 04-17-2004 11:11 AM

Can we try to get a post here from at least one car of every 100 please?

Start the ball rolling anyone.... and if one has already been posted for your Hundred series then please refrain.....

I'm like you... I think some #s mighta been skipped, but not sure....

I volunteer to update this message as needed to fill in the blanks so that we can keep track!...

1,000 - 24,000 let's see if we can find some with at least one from each hundred series. I would tend to think (and that's 'think' only... no 'proof') that if they started with a particular series they would finish it..... but not sure....

I know that in the case of the Prowler/Viper... those cars were built in the same plant and shared vin's. #4728 could be a viper, could be a prowler, for example. DOes anyone know if any other production is going on at the Kharmann plant along with the Xfire?

Or perhaps some of the German owners would step up to the plate and volunteer to investigate this first hand by asking someone at the plant?

Anyway......... start posting... let's see what we get!
