Can't get car to start!

A week ago, I was getting the battery icon staying lit even though the car drove fine, after a few days the car came up with the abs, traction control lights whilst driving it lost power and after trying to start it was just click click click.

So replaced a battery with a brand new one, car started up everything was fine apart from the red battery light that was still lit, drove it for a day or 2 with this light still on then all the lights came on again and car died.

Tried to start it up and it turns over but doesn't start, checked all the fuses they are fine, the battery is fine...

So I'm thinking its either the alternater, starter motor or immobiliser problem.

I had a immobiliser problem a few months back, where the fob would not work to lock/unlock the car and the alarm kept going off... but this got fixed...

So I really don't know what the problem is this time, if anyone could offer any tips i'd greatly appreciate it...:D

I would get the alternator checked, the battery is not getting charged.

Does it turn over like it has a heatlhy battery in it but won't start? Or it turns over like the battery is dying or very low?

It is not starter motor my friend, or else it wouldnt turn at all, so eliminate that.

Here is what I think:

1-If it turns over like it has a dying / low battery, then it is most likely your alternator because as you said the battery is brand new. (Make sure to check connections between alternator and battery to make sure they are properly connected, before getting a new alternator.

2- If it turns over just like any other healthy car but it does not start, then your problem is not batter or alternator. It is something else...

Another one suspecting the alternator.
Get it checked for FREE!

If your alternator is working, you should be able to start the car and disconnect the battery without it stopping. The battery testers at walmart for about 20 dollars plug into the lighter and read out WHILE YOUR ON THE ROAD so you get a real profile of the charge of the battery and alternator system. I strongly recommend one. Woody:cool:

yes it turns over but doesn't start, the battery is fine, as I can turn the lights on use radio etc...

How much is a new alternator roughly?

Having lights and radio dosent necessarily mean that your battery is good....you could have it load tested just to be sure it hasn't been damaged...

If the car is cranking over and not starting you should check the Crankshaft Position Sensor...

Crank and no start is usually the Crankshaft Position Sensor(easy fix and costs about $70)

No crank and no start(duh!) is frequently the Relay Control Module (bad solder joints that you can fix)

the garage replaced a fuse and it now starts but I need a new alternator, They can order me one from chrysler dealer in uk for $1300 lol, I'm never going to pay that, Seen alternators on ebay for $100 or so, just need to find someone who would be willing to ship to the UK for a reasonable cost.

Can you find a rebuilt one or remanufactured one? they come with a warranty, vs buying a new one, I would also check out MB's pricing on that alternator, if you want new.

How is this. shipped to your door. $187 total plus your taxes. Not a bad deal for a reman alternator.

I've purchased one, just need to wait for it to come, might be 2 weeks!

Is there an idiots guide to changing the alternator anywhere on here, because I'd be willing to give it a go if it's not to hard...

Re: Can't get car to start!

I have a couple questions on this. Did your car just die or did it slowly die. My car is doing the same thing. It will start just fine with a jump and then run for about 4 minutes and then start to die. All the lights will start to blink and then it will start to sputter out almost like its lacking gas. The only thing is that my battery light is not on.
http://homepage.mac.com/gregmeach/XF...-EngineSys.pdf page 28 will help you out with the alternator or as they call it the generator.

Re: Can't get car to start!

yeh mine slowly died, random lights came on the dash, then spluttered just like yours,

Your car will then not start... you need to replace the fuse to get it started (sorry i don't know which fuse) the garage did that for me, then buy yourself a new alternator....

alternator should be an easy fix for you....belt off, unbolt it, lay it aside, set the new one next it, transfer wiring to the new one, rebolt up the new one, replace belt....your are done my friend....cheers

Re: Can't get car to start!

The dealership said they replaced the fuse never told me what one. Im thinking it was the 200 amp fuse in that little black box near the battery. My car will start now with a jump start but die.

must have touched something you shouldn't have when trying to jump start it to have blown the fuse. Just added to the problem. Crank by no start! anyone want to say it????
