Maybe I'm too sensitive ... Carmax made me an Offer
I had a little time today, so I took my SRT6 roadster with 23k on it, to Carmax in Schaumburg, IL.. I feel my car is in perfect shape (LOL .. as we all do), and was just throwing it out to them just to see what the offer would be. After "appraising" it for about 50 minutes. The offer came back at $13000. I literally felt insulted. Am I wrong? I know used car dealers need to make a profit, but, geez .......

Howard,
Worth/Value is in the eye of the one writing the check, in this case, he can not pay you 'good' money for a car that may sit on a lot till next summer. On top of that, carmax is going to always offer trade in at best. Edit: I went and looked at the trade in KBB value on your car, in excellent condition and it was a touch north of $20K, I NEVER thought I would see that - for a trade in value... Wow |

Wow I'm holding my SP on the extra SRT6 for a while yet at $17.5K (or 10 oz of gold.) But, if the market goes up, I'm going with it. Ya'll need to jump while it's still cheap.:p BTW; that is a price reduction. last week I wanted 11 oz. |

Carmax is a joke don't let it get to you. The report i got for my car before buying it didn't list any problems with it. a few weeks after purchasing it, i tried to turn the fog lights on...nothing, then the bulb out light. bought some bulbs, opened the small door behind the fog lights...nothing except a wire dangling. (on both fog light housing)

I work for a Dodge dealer.
I haven't seen us offer KBB in the past 6 months. Generally 20% below. And I'm talking KBB trade in. |
Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive .... Carmax made me an Offer
Took a look last Friday in Cincinnati at a Porsche 911 S. MSRP is $160K. I bought my SRT6 roadster @ $25K. The best car buy I ever made.... Plus no depreciation that I have seen and it's not for sale. :D Gary

Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive .... Carmax made me an Offer
Considering Ford was going to give me $100 for my Riviera, $13k sounds pretty damn good. Mind you, ford had the same model Riv on the lot selling for $12k w/ 110k miles on it. I was expecting at least $2,500. Shame of you Ford. I ended up buying the Crossfire a week later.
but I was counting on my Crossfire to hold its value enough that in a perfect situation I could make an even trade on a brand new sub-compact with auto and air. If of course life made keeping the Crossie challenging. |
Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive .... Carmax made me an Offer
CarMax sells their cars under blue book value. So their surely going to offer you under blue book value. Squirrel Crusher

Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive ... Carmax made me an Offer
I have taken a number of cars to carmax and have always gotten a little over kBB trade-in.
Few months ago they offered $15k for my 05 roadster with 18k miles. Also took an '11 Toyota Sienna that the local Volvo dealer offered $24 in trade on a '12 Volvo S60. Carmax offered $28. Yes, their buy and sell prices can be beet if you are a good negotiator. Are you expecting to get more than wholesale? |

Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive ... Carmax made me an Offer
I had a similar experience with Carmax. I recently sold a 2009 Traverse. Carmax was my first stop. They were 4k under KBB trade in on a loaded low milage well maintained car. Next place I took it offered 4.5k more with only a 15 minute review time. So I shopped it around to several other wholesale buyers and eventually sold it for $4990 above Carslacks original offer.
Imo their set up allows for a low ball offer on every car because if they don't buy yours there are 30 more waiting in line for evaluation. I sold mine to a small dealer who gave me a fair price and who sold the car in two days again at a fair price. I am with Woody, Carmax is a rip off at least if you are on the selling end. |
Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive ... Carmax made me an Offer
You aren't being sensitive ..... that is just a stupid number. I am thinking that they booked it as a NA, not an SRT6.
Black Book Values for the 8/8/11 book are as follows: Clean 16350 Average 15050 Rough 11550 Banks will usually advance Clean Book, but you should get Average Black Book at least as a wholesale value on the car. Its actually worth a whole lot more ....... |
Re: Maybe I'm too sensitive ... Carmax made me an Offer
Pontiac was going to give me the value I was looking for when trading in my old Riv without me expressing what I wanted for it.
This led me to believe that if you want to get the most for your trade-in value, you should go to the company of the make. Ford doesn't care what a Buick is worth but Pontiac(GM, which also has Buick) does. I wonder how much Chrysler would offer you for it. |

The only dealers that are particualr are the stuffy Germans. As for Carmax,,,,,They are where you take your car if you don't want to sell it yourself, just dispose of it. roadster with a stick |
