Default Service History Log Book Delay

When I picked up my XF in April 04, the dealer told me that since the car was so new in the UK, the Log Books had not been printed. I was told to expect mine in the post in the future. However, I did get the Owners Manual.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Incidentally, my wife picked up her PT Cruiser at the same time, and her Log Book is now integrated into the Owners manual, which I thought was pretty neat.

I've just checked and I don't have a log book either. I will ring my dealer on Monday. Also, the Sound System Operating Instructions booklet I was given is not for the XFire radio! Useless!!!

Dan,

In the UK the Service Log Book is where the dealer places his official stamp to say you have car serviced by a recognised dealer, and the mileage gets recorded. When we come to sell cars in the UK, you get a higher price for vehicles with a Full Service History (FSH) (i.e. a complete Service Log Book). You may call it something different.

I wish it was done by computer - it would give me one less item to lose.

Are your cars more valuable when you sell them, if you have had them properly maintained?

I ordered my log/service book last month and got a call last week to tell me it's come in to the dealer so will have to pick it up when I have time.

You could expect to get more here in a private sale if you could show something along those lines. But when trading in to a dealer during buying a new car, in my experience it's never mattered if I've shown a complete maintenance history or no history at all. Most dealerships (around here at least) use wholesalers for all but the most desirable trade-in's, and all the wholesalers seem to care about is market factors related to the make/model/general appearance.

The dealership that I leased my Crossfire from has a formal agreement that specifies an additional $1000 for your trade-in if the logbook is up-to-date and all work has been performed at that dealership. That practice is becoming more common across the US. There is an obvious "hook" to promote service work at the dealership, but...

Many DaimlerChrysler dealerships are now involved in the DCX Certified Used Car program, which offers an 80,000 mile 8 year warranty on any Certified Used Car purchased at the dealership. It costs a dealer much less to "certify" a used car that has been maintained at or beyond manufacturer requirements, so they can afford to pay more for that trade-in.

Import owners have known for years that regular maintenance not only pays immediate dividends in performance and reliability, but can certainly increase the vehicle's value at trade in. Domestic owners are just now beginning to discover that this is true in many cases.

Fritz

Hence computer records, they're the same and more reliable.Hand written ones could be false or faked.

Dan,

Don't trust computer records any more than paper.

 I work in IT (on a major health system at the moment) and the system has just let me kill the same person today as I killed yesterday. Can't wait for the lawsuit.......
