Ha Ha Ha dealers are so funny. New $130 shipped and you can find them at lower prices. Pay yourself $1000 for labor!

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

you should have asked the dealer if that included getting your rear end greased too.

BTW, you can find a thread on here somewhere where a young lady in SoCal INSISTED on replacing it herself, and was successful, so don't come back whining about not being able to do it ........

You guys just dont get it, they are telling you their prices and if you pay, so much the better. Their pricing clearly states: we dont want this job. It is their way of being polite. ENJOY Woody

and oh yes
soon weekend

I disagree, in my opinion their is nothing polite about it. I believe that the dealer is saying, are you stupid or desperate enough to pay our price. I’ve even had the dealer lie to make the job sound hard so that they could get the work. My wife took her car to the dealer when I was out of town. They told her it needed a vacuum check valve and should be replaced immediately to prevent damage. The dealer cost $169, the price for the part at the dealer $8 and the time to install 30 seconds. She waited for me to get home.

I went through this last year. Do NOT buy via eBay unless you are certain the vendor is reputable. Do NOT pay the dealer -- the alternator you will get at that price isn't even new, it is rebuilt.

Go to your friendly local alternator rebuilder and pay him $200 or so. Then install yourself. One thing to be aware of -- the "picture book" reference some of the rebuilders use to determine clocking may be wrong. Make sure he marks the top and bottom portions before disassembly and puts them back together the same way, otherwise you wont' be able to reinstall.

Happy motoring.

That's what seller feedback is for. The big plus about Ebay is that a whole bunch of sellers are selling the one item you want. You just have to figure out the item that is the best value for the best price. I'm an Ebay believer!

It is true that Chrysler dealer's (and Mercedes to a slightly lesser extent) have notoriously way overpriced parts. This is one of the ways they make money. IMHO I assume that the reason this is successful is that for every gearhead out there like us, there are a 100 Joe Schmoes who are willing to pay that awful markup because they don't know any better and don't care or don't have the wherewithal to figure it out. At least for us, we can simply laugh when the dealer quotes a part price and say "You must be kidding, I can get that part for $900 less elsewhere". Knowledge is power when it comes to cars.

I have not worked on a car for many years...I think the last time I could see the pavment when looking down in my engine. Things have sure changed. But, in this case I would do some shopping and even get some of the Junk Yard dealers involved. If you have a trusted Mechanic (wish i had a Crossfire expert) I have a European Car (MB) exper then sometimes they can help you "I don't know what part I need". This forum is so good for all the experts we have here. They can always stear you into the right part and a reasonalble price. I will buy parts for my 2 Xfires, but most likly unless it seems simple get our mechanic friend to do the labor. trust is the big issue. Think the dealers costs are to high? call them out. Ask for the break down, then show them you can beat there prices etc, talk to the service manager, owner of the dealership. If thgey still are high, then it is that they don't want to work on your Crossfire. Then I would call Chyrsler and let them know. I also love to play one Chrysler dealership off another.

KJ
