Did you only remove the cats or also the resonator?

I am getting some push back when trying to do this in Indiana, as several shops have told me it is illegal to remove the cats. Not sure if that only applies when they are your only set and these people are wrong, or if our state is more strict. There are no emmisions tests here, so I don't get it...

I can't speak to Indiana, but I experienced the same in VA where it is definitely a law not to tamper with the emissions components of any vehicle. I ultimately decided to forego this mod although I really would like to do it for this reason. Do some research on Google if you haven't already, there may be information specific to your state.

In Illinois, told the car by law has to leave with the same number of cats it came in with.
So I suggested to the manager he leave them in my tunk ;) He was ok with that & so am I.

Hmmm, did you tell them to just remove the two rear ones only. The two in the front stay installed. That sucks if they won't work with you!

I went to 3 shops. One said they wouldn't do it, another said it would void the warranty, which I don't think I have a warranty as its beyond the 3 year/36,000 miles and I bought it used. Another shop said they'd do it but wanted $150, which I think is too much. Looks like if I want it done I'll have to find a way to do it myself!

If any of you guys are in Chicago and want the cats removed , my gti when i had it had 2.5inch down pipe with a straight pipe all the way to muffler
It cost me 200$ , the guy told me it would cost 80$(only had one cat however) to put the cat back on incase I couldn't pass emissions , so i assume It's 80$ to remove one as well
The place is on belmont and elston It's called velasquez mufflers right across from burger king..so go there if your close enough and while you wait get a burger :D
The place is run by all Latinos , and most of which speak little to no English cent 3 guys there that are fluent
I recommend them..Btw have anyone had problems with cel's or passing emissions ?

Yeah, I only want the rear two removed, with the mods now it has a great sound. I miss the magnaflow on my old car, but do not want anything quite that loud on this one...

Haven't read any mention of 'drone' at highway speeds. That would be a deal breaker for me.

I moved out of VA just because I was tired of their dictatorship attitudes toward cars (not to mention the yearly inspections, tax stickers, emmision constraints etc). Don't miss it one bit.

Well here is my first ever attempt at putting something on youtube... my muffler free XF (view from c.14 secs onwards). Some may feel it's a little loud but it works for me ;)

When you remove your cats do you lose any low end torque? Any cons to doing this?

I haven't noticed any negative effects at all. Make sure you keep the cats if you get them removed, these are expensive so make it clear to whoever removes them that you will be keeping your parts.

Removing the rear cats is something I would like to do. The problem is, it is illegal in Texas and there is a hefty fine if caught. Something else of interest, I found that it is illegal in Texas is to put a Turbo on a car that didn't come equipped with one from the factory.
